I like to put recordings of TV programmes into folders, eg: folder name = Law & Order and then put all the Law and Order episodes into it. However, as you will probably realise, you can't have twoo files of the same name in the same folder.
When it comes to renaming the cursor goes to the beginniong of the file name and I have to rename eg:Law & Order to Law & Oder 2. OK, not too difficult.
My question: Is there a way to move the cursor to the right without overwriting the existing letters. It takes ages to rename like this?

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is, but I quickly got tired of renaming files and I now use a tap which appends the date to the name. I think the TAP is automove, which you can also configure to move files to folders automatically if you want (I use it only to get the date appended and move the files myself).

Like Ang I use a TAP that puts the date at the end of the file name.

That said, you can easily edit the last characters of a file name in rename mode. Just as you can ove the 'cursor' around the character pad, you can move it down (or up if onthe top line) to the file name line and cusor right (left as well!!) to the end then back up to the character pad and eter an ending. I use this to put the episode number at the end instead of the date sometimes.

But there is an easier way .. connect you PC and edit using Altair

I think the UK Archive TAP, has the ability to use the numeric buttons on the remote to enter text / rename files a bit like SMS on a mobile phone keypad, so that might speed things up. Well I think it's UK Archive that has this, perhaps I'm thinking of UK Timers, they all look the same, LOL!

Using MyStuff doesn't throw up errors when you move a file to a folder containing a file with the same name AFAIK

Back to that old "my stuff" tap again or at least I think thats what does it for me. I just select the completed recording, click the yellow button on the remote and transfer to my selected folder, no requirement to rename my "CSI" or "Law & Order" as the recordings can be listed by date or indeed can be listed by name. For example I only have one folder and transfer all the tv i want to this folder for copying to dvd for watching @work. Just transferred 55GB of stuff, but when you select to list recordings by name it will group all recordings in alphabetical order and also show the date. In addition, highlight the recording and it will give you the EPG data.

Not convinced to get "My Stuff" yet.. ?

I haven't used any TAPs just yet. Getting used to the basic setup first. But may well try some in the near future.

Bat-Man, don't be afraid of try TAPs. Even I have managed to sort it out. There are some really talented people who have written some neat TAPs.

Two good sites to find them are;

The most difficult thing in all this TAP stuff is having a PC that can connect to your toppy via USB; that means a long lead or a laptop Others have networked their toppies, but it cost money. Once that's sorted it a case of trying and finding those that you like and work with each other - key presses etc.

And remember that you only need a USB connection to get the TAP files onto the Toppy. It doesn't need to be a permanent connection unless you're going to be copying additional programme guide data across on a regular basis.
