A few questions if I may Damian...

1. If you played the 5.1 recordings out from HDD did it work?

2. On HDD and DVD should it leave 2 audio tracks, selectable by that banner thing...?

3. Were you using a SCART without audio pins connected?”

I'll also take the opportunity to answer Patrick, as the 5.1 recording just worked for me first time, through the Maplin converter, no probs at all.

1. Yes. The 5.1 works from the HDD as well as from a DVD to which they're copied.

2. Correct.

3. I was using one with audio connected. However it's clear once you've selected 5.1 recording these are permanently ignored when you select EXT2 as your source - if I disconnect the coax input sound is never recorded.

One final thought occurs to me, that might be the source of your problem. 5.1 can only be recorded in HQ or SP modes. I switched to SP+ mode as my preference, before spotting that 5.1 had stopped working. Are you in SP or HQ mode as if not, that's probably your fix.....

And a final, final thought, sorry if this sounds patronising, but you are 100% your source is DD5.1 aren't you? Don't know what your source is, but Sky for example often has movies with a DD 'carrier' but only a 2.0 soundtrack. Worth a quick check to be sure, and if you haven't tried it, pumping the coax into an a/v amp to confirm the path is fully working right up to the Philips.

Telewest TV Drive - yes, works straight into the amp!

Philips have just posted a software update for the DVDR7250H. Might fix some of the minor niggles that we have had. Link: http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...=Link_Software

Bizarre. I've literally just had an e-mail from customer support in response to my complaint about it's sluggishness saying there's no fix and if I don't like it, return it to whence it was purchased!

Will give the new firmware a try, then another e-mail to Philips methinks......
