I have a ProLogic setup and am planning to buy a DVD player this weekend. Since new DVD's are generally recorded using Dolby Digital (or DTS) will my Prologic TV automatically convert the DD signal or do I need to buy a DVD player which can do this, e.g. Sony 535?

pro logic
you should be able to get pro logic from any DVD player
you simply need to connect plugs from the red + white connectors on your DVD to your TV or you may not even have to do that as the signal may be carried down the scart lead Anyway any DVD that has dolby digital sound will play fine on a dolby pro logic system I connected my toshiba DVD player to my surround amp using red+white cables and have had no problems at all with sound quality and all disks i have played have played Also when you get your DVD player make sure that in its menu you set its picture output to RGB for best picture quality |

Yeah, all players should be able to downmix 5.1 to 4.0 (dolby surround) quite easily but do think about making the umpt to 5.1 as with the advent of 6.1 (7 channel amps etc) the 5.1 amps are getting cheaper and cheaper with the sound of dolby digital 5.1 being miles better than dolby pro-logic.
(If you're buying a DVD player, definitely by a multi region sony!! preferably 735 or 535!!) |

That's just what I wanted to here! Thanks guys! My intention has been to go D5:1 (or DTS) from the start but it may take 9+ months before I have sufficient funds.
I must say, I was impressed with ProLogic. Prior to that I was on plane old nicam. Wow! what a difference... will 5:1 impress me? Hope so. I've got to impress the wife and sell the idea before I splash the cash (and this woman can't tell the difference between mono & proL!!!!!). |

Sony are no way near as good as the Pioneers, just pick up any tv/hifi magazine for proof! Regards Patrick |

Sorry, there's more...
Why is the 535 better than the 335/6. Isn't the only difference a built in D5.1 decoder? Surely separates is better, i.e. DTS and increased flexibility? What about the 735? My funds don't stretch that far, but what more should I expect to see from this player over the 335? (considering the fact that this player would cost an extra £200!!) |

In reply to Patrick...
The hifi mag's rate the Sony player very highly!!! Also, Sony (& Sanyo (lol)) are one of the few manufacturers who are breaking the mould and building non-standard sized boxes. I have a separates HiFi + speakers, + VHS video, + TV surround speakers. I expect to get, in the future, a DVD player, DD amp and 5 speakers (plus sub). My living room is starting to look a bit daft! I want a neat all round solution. Bose sounds good (but also very expensive). To sum up... I want small, neat and quality in one box. |

Colour and B&W Stereo and Mono Man Utd and Man City etc etc In other words...YES you will be impressed. |
