Orange Wireless Internet Card
N-I-C-K
23-10-2002
Hi,

I've seen this card in a dixons cataolgue that fits in a laptop and allows you to have wireless always on access to the internet, but you pay for the data you download not the time spent online.

Could you answer me a few questions.

1. How it works. (Sorry for sounding uneducated. )
2. What sort of upload/download speeds you get
3. How much does the bandwich cost.

Thanks in advanced.

If it's the Orange card then it's GSM, 28,000, 20p/minute. Slots into your PCMCIA slot.

Er, I think. I don't think it's always on GPRS.

But I'm often wrong. Sorry I can't find it on the Orange site. Have a look in their catalogue next time you pass their shop

The Nokia HSD card as has been available on Orange UK for over a year now, uses HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data).

The card itself fits into a PCMCIA slot, and supports speeds of upto 43.2kbps - though in the UK, Orange only supports 28.8kbps - this is upload and download. You'll pay between 15 - 25p/minute for connections made this way - http://www.orange.co.uk/services/orange_high_speed.html

Any HSD calls made whilst roaming on compatible networks will be charged at the standard roaming rate.

There are several other similar products available from Orange, including the Option GPRS card, and the new Nokia data card - which I believe supports both HSCSD & GPRS.

For what it's worth, IP over GPRS is supported in the UK by every network except One2One/T-Mobile. HSCSD is only available on Orange.
