This is getting rediculous, I have signed up for TPS and I'm still getting loads of cold calls. I got 4 yesterday, 2 for mobiles, one was "London Mobile Telecoms", a call from N Power for the 2nd day in a row and I also got a call from Ideal Homes who apparently "tried to conteact me" last week, well I told them I knew that because I have answered their calls at least 4 times this week and am repeatedly telling them I don't own my home. She said I should sign up for TPS and I said I have.

Is it Telewest do they sell your number because my gran had the same problem when she was with Telewest but since she went back to BT she hasn't had a problem.

This makes me want to unplug the phone from the socket and I really cannot wait until my contract is up so I can get rid of my landline completely.

It could very well be Telewest if other people you know have had the same problem, it's too much of a coincidence, wouldn't you say? You have the right to ask them where they got your number from, so if they ring again it's worth asking them.

My contract ends later this month and I keep getting calls from someone trying to offer me an upgrade, but it's not O2 (who I'm with) - it's some shop. I have no idea why they won't leave it, they ring about 3 or 4 times a day. Once my contract has finished I'm going to buy a Pay&Go SIM to get away from it.

Just coincidence, when we were on BT we had loads of calls even though we are on TPS.

When your Gran went back to BT I take it she had a new number too then?

Hi,

How long ago was it you signed up to TPS? It takes about a month to become active. Once this month has passed, do what I do. Let them start their sales pitch and after about 10 to 15 secs, interupt them and say something along the lines of "Sorry, who did you say you were and what company was that?" Then ask them where they are based. Ask them for contact details if possible. Once you have all this info, then tell them that they have commited a criminal offence under the data protection act as your number is registered with the TPS (that statement is true as the Data Protection Act falls under criminal law). If they refuse to give you the company details, they have also committed an offence under the 1948 (I think) Business Act as a company has to give details of the registered address and directors if requested. You then inform them that you will be making a complaint to the TPS and this will get followed up.

Once they have hung up, do a 1471 to see if there was a number and then goto the TPS website and fill in the online form.

One rather dim lady called from Anglia Double Glazing last week and when challenged refused to give out name or company name and details. She was working from home in the evening and had forgotten to with hold her number. Having a home number gave the TPS contact details for the caller. Let's hope her boss who supplied the calling list gets what he deserves.

I suspect that by now the "rather dim lady" has been sacked from her minimum-wage job, and that her boss is carrying on exactly as before.
