my toshiba 14N21B2 portable tv has pretty much died when its switched on you get a black screen with white lines on the screen. the screen including menus gradually get darker and darker until it gets so dark it looks like its off. when using the scart socket you get a picture that moves all over the screen and it also gradually gets darker until the screen looks black iv'e tried disconnecting everything and re-trying but it still wont work. anyone got any ideas or how much a repair would be if its a simple problem? i don't really want to have to buy a new tv, its only 2 years or so old

Sounds like a possible IF strip fault, which should be repairable in the right hands. Trouble is of course that portables are so cheap nowadays that they are almost disposable.

Thanks, I just brought a new one in the end.

I've emailed Toshiba though as i'm not very happy that it only lasted 2 years and wasn't used very much... I doubt they will do anything but its worth a try.

I would say a decent branded TV such as Toshiba should last more than 2 years, regardless of warraranty periods. Persevere with Toshiba, and also your supplier, as this set was clearly not of {insert phrase I'm thinking of, bit like merchantable\serviceable quality or something}.

I'm very glad i contacted them, I can't believe how good their service is, it only took me a couple of minutes to get through to someone and she was very understanding and easy to talk too, no problems at all I've got 2 other Toshiba TV's in the house, a 28" flat widescreen (CRT) and another portable so i'm glad i did buy them from Toshiba

They replaced your TV outside of warranty?

All you did was phone the customer helpline? Did they even ask for proof of purchase?

My Tosh CRT is 15 months old and just out of warranty. If it breaks down in the next year I'll know what to do!

Excellent!

I’ll bear this in mind when looking at future products from Toshiba because I have not purchased a Toshiba product in recent times.
