Hi

I have purchased a Nokia n70 off ebay which is a 3G phone. It comes without a sim card and is unlocked. I am currently on orange pay as you go and I was wondering if my current sim would work in this phone or I need a special 3G one. I would also be greatful if someone could tell me which networks offer 3g on Pay As You Go as I am considering changing.

Thanks
Craig

I think majority of the networks offer 3G, Im positive Orange/O2 and Vodafone all do. All you need to do is if you got a sim just give customer service a ring and say you got a new 3G phone and you'd like to activate USIM on your simcard for 3G access. Then they will do it for free but may take 24hours or so to activate and your away

I'm pretty sure you will need a new sim from Orange. When I used a Samsung Z107 on Orange the sim was slightly different. As the previous poster quite rightly said they are called a usim.

Orange CS should be able to just about manage to help you . Alternatively I'm pretty sure superdrug sell 3 sim cards.

Just one question how much did you pay for this phone on ebay? Just curious as i might sell my N70 on 3 and pay off the contract.

Orange will not activate 3G on a standard SIM. You must go to an orange shop (the likes of phones 4 u will claim orange don't offer 3g) and buy an orange 3g USIM. This is about £5 iirc.

Moving networks again, steven? :P

Thanks for the replies. I paid £125 for the phone which had only been turned on once to check it worked.

Well when I was looking on there the ones which were locked to 3 were going for a bit less than those which are unlocked or locked to another network. You may have a chance of getting around £100 or even more depending on the condition its best just to go on ebay and look at the completed listings.

I just called up 3 to see how much it would cost to pay off my contract and they said £240 and they offered me a plan of 750 mins, 150 texts, 50 video minutes or something for £30 a month when im paying that for 400 mins and 250 texts or whatever it is now

I accepted but still might pay it off.

That'll be because they will lose customers to O2 with their 1000 mins and 150 text offer for £35 a month.

That's not true. A brand new SIM card is needed, a standard 2G SIM cannot work on the 3G network.

It appears to be possible with Vodafone.

I put a prepay GSM SIM into my phone, called CS asking to have 3g activated and they said it's already activated.

I don't have Vodafone 3G coverage (their map says I should though) so I can't test that.

The chips on the SIM card are totally different though. The SIM doesn't have the technology to pick up a 3G signal, so I really can't understand that.

I thought the same, but apparently the SIMS vodafone have been providing for the past few years are 3g ready.

I was kinda suprised when, last June, I went in a Vodafone shop with me mate, who bought a new 3G handset and instead of getting a new SIM the staff just put his old one in and BAM, 3G coverage.

My t-mobile 2G SIM gets 3G reception too. Didn't have to call them up, just put it in my 6280 and it worked.

Hi Moox,

Most modern Vodafone SIM cards are fully compatible with 3G and don't need changing.

The only provisioning that needs to be done by Vodafone Customer Service's is to make Video Calls.

If you've got a 3G handset, you'll also need to make sure that you're phone is set to dual mode (3G and GSM).

Hope this helps.

I just have a question and was wondering has T-Mobile actually got a 3G service yet? I mean i was told that they had some handsets with it but has it officially launched?

Not too sure about T-Mobile but me spare Virgin SIM was picking up the 3G signal the other day and making (voice) calls fine.

There's even an FAQ on Virgins Website, here!

As far as i'm aware, T-mobile have gone for a soft launch, very soft launch! My T-mobile 6280 gets better 3g coverage than my Vodafone! Video calling works too.
