Baz, I would suggest you pop into an EmpireDirect store, there is one in Bolton

on their site they are in the wrong area, they are listed under "DVD Recorders" but should be under "DVD Recorder with Hard Drive"

440HX-s £303

540HX-s £344

but delivery is only a fiver and if you buy over the web you are protected by the distance selling regulations. but I'm going to buy one in store on Thursday (late opening)

hope this helps

However, there not multiregion from empire, and are from totaldigital.

These do seem to be the best prices around for either version, not seen cheaper.

Totaldigital reduce a tenner for 440HX from 299 to 289 and 540HX stay at 349.00 -- it include multi-region/RCE free region as ive tried both disc - it worked great, delivery take 1-3 days at 9.99 but you get by 24-36hrs after it dispatch..

EmpireDirect only sell recorder with Region 2 but you may can hack to change multi-region -- see if there any website page...

Cheers Chris, only live in Preston so can get there easy enough, let me know what you think of it after a couple of days.
Does anybody know if there is a remote hack to make this multi-region?
mjt03
27-06-2006
No, but you may have spend hours or days to find where to get the hack from internet...

if you buy nearby store then you have to use Region 2 only for sometime until the hack is release in few months time cos you know these 2 recorders are new as came out May 2006...

Im happy to pay the cost through Totaldigital include multi-region/RCE free region... it delivery very fast via Citylink that I got by 24 hrs.

You may want to get unlock and then use multi-region for £20 >> http://www.multidvd.co.uk/default.as...me=DVDReviewer

I dont see any databse for 440HX and 540HX remote hack as it wont be until few months time but think it may not work cos all Pioneer seem only to unlock for £20 so it up to you which one to buy from EmpireDirect or online at totaldigital for multi-region -- remember its your own risk.

If you are in Preston you could also try Peter Tyson who are based in Carlisle

See http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz...erdvr440.shtml

It's a bit more expensive, but you do get Del, Multi-region, SCART cable, 2 yr warranty and some DVD-Rs included in the price.

They delivered v. quickly to me

It quite dear - yes and let people choose which online to buy from.. I have lots of DVD disc already so I paid cheaper for 540HX-S for £358 inc delivery and also delivery very quick as well (it depend when it processing and dispatch)... there are plenty online store to offer differnet prices... you got from Carlisle store and I got it online store from Birmingham... remember DVD-R is just recordable disc that quite cheaper to buy for 50 disc at www.rambox.co.uk and http://www.dvdshoponline.co.uk/ that what Ive bought it in all different disc format - DVD-RAM look nice but it quite very thinny layer and have to be careful when use it (I have 5 of 4.7GB single side Maxell and 5 of 9.4GB double side)

I promise you this is the exact conversation I had this morning with Total Digital. I had ordered a '440 on the Internet site and it was a couple of days overdue so I rang them for an explanation. Now I've been here before with other shops so I had a magazine, a fresh cuppa, and plenty of time for a long wait on hold!
I ring the number - expecting a long fangled series of menus - it is picked up on the very first ring by a very brusque sounding Asian man who asks what I want
Me - "Err, order number xxxx . . ."
Him - (after about 2-3 seconds max) "Mr Perry Mitchell?"
Me - "Yes . . "(just about to ask what has happened with my order)
Him - "You'll get it Monday"
Me - "You're sure?"
Him - "Yes"
Me - "Thanks"
Him - he's gone already!

Now this is my sort of deal - no effing about with irrelevant menus, no hanging about for a real person, no false 'have a nice day' bullcrap, and hopefully no more excuses needed! I'm impressed!
Of course it would have been better if they didn't 'lie' on the web site about having it in stock, but then they all do that and most of them are 'virtual' warehouses so they are in the hands of their actual suppliers.
Of course after all this big upping, they'll probably lose it in transit!

So did it arrive today????

Also, has anyone seen this cheaper in a high street store?
Saw it in Comet for £389.00 !!!!!!
When a member of there bright staff said "can I help?"
I said "I would like this Pioneer HX440, but I've seen it cheaper"
His reply............"Oh"

and that's was the end of his sales pitch.......classic!

Good you chose DVR440HX but are you happy to pay the cost? it just only Region 2 when you use dvd playback.. Totaldigital is £289.00 plus £9.99 for the multi-region that quite cheaper.

I bought the 540HX for £349+9.99 = £358 and got delivery by 24 hrs -- the version in my dvd recorder showed "Region: 14" meaning it can playback all region include RCE free region. Anyway enjoy with your new 440HX when it comes.

one thing is Comet has incorrect info in the details as they mentioned Divx support is wont work but that not correct one -- both 440HX and 540 does work Divx support.

I picked Comet because of the good customer support in the event of a replacement wanted. Not that I know anything about Total Digital , but that's the point, I don't.

I don't need multi-region because I need it for editing and archiving from my Humax 9200Ts which are on the van tomorrow too. Thanks for the good wishes.

Preston Baz will be glad to know it did arrive safely today, and after a couple of frights with 'finger trouble' It seems to work OK.
So just to confirm - a multi-region 440 delivered to my door for less than £300 - must be the best deal out there?

mjt03....you must work for Total Digital?

I spoke too soon - further testing revealed a buzzing on the audio with certain levels of video (i.e. it comes and goes depending on the actual image).
I've returned it for replacement so we'll see just how good Total Digital are!

Hodg, do you have one of these? Or are you talking about the 9200T? Did you get that cable?

I got a new one pretty much by return once I got the bad one back. The replacement seems to work fine (touching wood etc!)
