Hello,

My sisters mate calls us a lot and she only lives down the street but the number that she calls on is completley unrelated to our area code??

The number is 05600 48XXXX

When ours is 01964 67XXXX

It just strikes me as odd, unless they use VOIP?

I have third this site, but to no avail!
http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/section/tci/locator.shtml

Any thoughts??

Yes, that'll be VOIP. I have an 056XX number as well. Many VOIP providers let you choose between a non-geographic number or an 01/02 area code (which you usually have to pay extra for).

Codes beginning 055 and 056 (I think) were introduced specifically for VOIP services.

Not sure about the number issue, but with a number like that you can't be too far away from me!

(Brid, BTW)

A fair way then. I saw the Hornsea code and forgot the other side of town was there, lol.

Yeah, It's VoIP.

www.sipgate.co.uk don't charge you for a proper 01 or 02 number, and you can have any area code as you like, therefore even though I live in the Midlands I can use my London code, Manchester code, Liverpool code or any of the other codes I have without being in those areas. I also have an Italian number, Romanian number, German number, dutch number and a French number.

VoIPStunt, VoIPCheap, SIPDiscount, VoIPBuster also issue you with a proper 01 or 02 number for free as long as you top up with credit and only in the major areas otherwise they issue you with the VoIP 0560 number as do BT.

I used to be able to spoof caller ID from my one account, and send any number I wanted.

This all means you can't rely on caller ID as a means of identifying where the caller is from.

When I am abroad and use my VoIP service the person I am calling will still see my UK number and they can call my UK number and I get the call.

Skype charges for a proper number, so go elsewhere where they are free.

http://www.magsys.co.uk/telecom/codelook.asp will look the number up for you, if it is a standard 01 or 02 number it won't say it's VoIP but the operator who issued the number such as Magrathea who handle numbers for Sipgate, VoIP talk and others or Connect Telecom UK for the Finarea and Betamax.

Yes, but you need to use the crappy USB phones, have the PC on and their rates are dearer than you get from using a landline.

How much it cost to call an 05600 or similar VOIP number from a standard BT landline? Is it charged as a landline call so would be free on BT Together 3 and TalkTalk 3 packages?

Would calls to 05600 numbers also be included on mobile phone call allowances (where they include free calls to landlines?).

Reading the BT price list it appears that 0560 numbers are charged a BT Together 1 rates to 01 and 02 number, whether you are on BT 1, 2 or 3.

Whether that is a mistake and they are charged the same as what you are charged for 01 and 02 on whichever BT tariff you are on, I don't know.

Call 1899 charge the same 3 pence per call to 0560 as they do to 01 and 02.

Not sure about mobile phones, would need to contact your provider.

If you are after a VoIP service, it would be better to go for one that provides an 01 or 02 number.

Be careful with TalkTalk they charge more for mobile calls, and calls to 0844, 0845, 0870 unless you can find the alternative 01 or 02 number. On their website their mobile call charges look cheaper than BT that is because the price displayed is if you take out TalkMobile at £1.50/month extra.
