The Future of Soaps
Now that Brookside is relegated to the afternoon and will face the chop next year - what do you think the future holds for soaps?
Here's what I hope will happen in soapland: Brookside - gone already. Crossroads - dull and badly acted - will be axed (again!) Night & Day - rumoured to be axed already. Home & Away -Will probably stay on screen for a few more years and will probably be re-classified as kids TV. Family Affairs - was better when Pete was really nasty and troubled druggie teen Arlo was in it. C5 haven't developed the show at all - axe it and replace with new soap. Neighbours -safe for now but the future looks more uncertain. Format is looking as tired as Harold's wardrobe. Eastenders - the gongs and good viewing figures will dry up in the very near future. It's become too sensationalist to be gritty or real. Can't seem to get writing its charactors out of the show right. Slater family seem to have 'burned out' and there are too many weak charactors. It's rumoured that viewers are currently turning off in droves. Emmerdale - should develop it's upperclass V working class scenarios which generates the drama. More lovely, lowly Yorkshire hill farmers and filthy-rich country toffs needed! Coronation St - Good to see that it's gone back to making humour and a sense of community a focus but needs to continue to have whats really going on in Greater Manchester (teen motherhood, joyriding, family debt etc) as continual sub-plots. Just my opinions! If the rumours are true and Crossroads, Night &Day and Brookie have already gone...which soap will be next to face the axe?! Also - with a 'soap cull' looming acrross the networks - what new soaps would you devise? I personally think central Leeds and South London need soap representation! emzi |
