The next firmware release is, I can now reveal, on target for release in July. More details - though not extensive, just yet - at http://www.toppy.org.uk/static/bastilleDay.html

Great news, Nigel

I don't suppose you want to commit on the 'Jump to Live' Bug then? That's the only one that annoys me now

The EPG and subtitles are all that I feel 100% confident about at the moment; we've seen those through all the recent betas, without any serious issues or side-effects.

Until we have a final release, and see what else has been changed, I'm not going to say what else will make the final cut; for example, we had an early EPG fix before the December release, which didn't make it in.

All I will say is that work has been done in lots of areas; it's a question of seeing which things the testers reckon are ready for prime time, and which might benefit from more tweaking.

Great news Nigel with the EPG fixed the box should outsell the market. Well done to all the testers. Is there an OTA planned?

I'm fairly confident that we will see an OTA, but I don't know any details of the date yet. As soon as I have them, I'll add another news item to the Toppy web site.

Right now, we're just waiting for (hopefully) the last test file before the release.

All sounds promising.

What's the difference between firmware and software please?

Right I will air my extensive ignorance about this - is firmware any programmes stored on the main board - like BIOS stuff. Rather than software - anything stored on the HD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware

"In computing, firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device. It is often provided on flash ROMs or as a binary image file that can be uploaded onto existing hardware by a user."

Basically its the "operating system" of a piece of consumer electronics. Expect the difference to blur further as boxes like this move more to running real operating systems, there are already a few that run linux. Its becoming cheaper to put functionality in software than build it in hardware, this will continue as high powered CPUs come down in price.

Firmware are utilities, an example being; you are a shop, you have 100 units that need to have the same setup. You do one setup as you like, then copy that to a PC, then just use the firmware to ghost every receiver the same + same yourself a lot of time!

Software is flexible adjustments to the receiver’s general use or interaction (normally developed from feedback)

Nigel has put news on update here

http://www.toppy.org.uk/static/bastilleDay.html

Should think the OTA date will appear on there when he has it.

There is the engineering channel download schedule nothing on there at present.

A guide to the firmware update is now available, in pdf form, from the Toppy web site; you'll find a link on the home page, www.toppy.org.uk

Excellent, thanks Nigel.

I notice from the pdf that playback interruptions during chase play have improved

When the playback is 'momentarily interrupted' what happens on screen? i.e. Do you still see the 'live' broadcast picture and then it skips back a la mcgCYRResume?

TIA

The firmware is now available, though only to registered members of the forum at the moment.

More details are in the news story at http://www.toppy.org.uk/static/bastilleRelease.html

I know you don't have a date yet for OTA update, but are we looking at days, weeks, or months?
nwhitfield

No idea, really. It won't be days, becuase the DTG schedule runs for 2 weeks into the future already. But beyond that, I don't know.

The new firmware seems to be a success. If anyone has been put off the Topfield because of its inability to collect EPG data for all channels from one channel that is all in the past. EPG fills up fast especially when been on BBC1 for a short while.

On a par with the Humax there is not much in it, the Toppy just has the edge, but only just.

However I am finding it sluggish now in response to the remote, running with Jags v3. Also have seen the dots displayed numerous times during power on/offs, so have defaulted, and restored....will see how it goes.

As I mentioned in the guide, there may be issues with some TAPs, like Jag's, that are quite memory hungry.

Some of them make their own copy of the EPG data, which isn't strictly necessary with the new firmware. And, just like Windows gets slugging when you've got lots of things open, so will the Toppy.

I'm actually wondering about reverting to the built in guide from EPG Navigator!

Having read the guide previously, and noting the comments re memory, was half expecting a problem.

Going to give it a couple of Days to see if I get used to it, if not, then I'll revert to Dec firmware (although I think my mind is already made up).

I would be tempted to do this also... there have been occasions even on the December firmware where I can't find something in EPG navigator but the standard EPG populates it.

I'll wait for OTA update though - I know it's a pain when people ask you when that will be, but what I really was trying to judge was whether to wait or not. I'm not having any problems with the December firmware so waiting for the OTA is fine with me. I hate connecting the long string of cable!!! Bring on wireless USB!!!

My comments about the EPG working much better with new firmware where based on how I had seen the standard EPG working now. I never use it in anger myself but thought I would check out effect of new F/W.

In fact I use MyStuff and eit2mei. Getting full 7 days instantly on every channel. Remote reponse unaltered.
eit2mei and MyStuff have both been updated to take advantage of firmware and eit2mei now needs no setting up; which was a bit of fuss previously.
