Can I do This.
I have never owned a mobile phone before. I now need one .I am considering
something very basic. Vodofones Simply 3. I visit Ireland 3 or 4 times a year
and it is costing me a small fortune phoning home (UK).What I want to know
is, (1) can this phone be unlocked. I want to use it in the UK and when I get
to Ireland I want to remove the sim card and replace it with an Irish sim card
can I do this?.Is this possible.I would appreciate any help or advice or suggestions.

If you cant find it it might be worth calling your provider and asking for a subsidy pin, I know that tmobile charge £15 for the priviledge, not sure about other providers though!

The Vodafone Simply may NOT be able to be unlocked - it's exclusive to Vodafone and the built-in features of it may require you to be using Vodafone.

If you're looking for something very simple, I'd recommend this - click here - all phones from the Carphone Warehouse are unlocked when you buy them, and they just give you a Pay and Go SIM card.

If you buy the mobile I mentioned above, on Virgin Mobile for £24.99 - you'll be able to use ANY network SIM card in the phone, and it's dead easy to use.

Wont the Vodafone mobile that he wants to buy be able to accept a Vodafone Ireland sim card over in ireland? So all he needs to do is buy a Vodafone Ireland sim card!

Many thanks to all of you. I am afraid i have burnt
my bridges. I bought a vodophone simply vs3
today.I wish now I had waited.Nockie 3 idea
sounds like a good compromise. Incidently the
local market say they can do it for £15 but they
have to take the phone away with them to a factory,is this a good idea. Nockie 3 To use an irish sim card would'nt the phone still have to be unlocked

Most phone shops (Not network owned) can unlock. Never heard of one having to take one away to a factory.....Shop around..

I apologise for going off at a tangent slightly, but is the thing about PAYG phones from CPW being unlocked a recent thing?

The reason I ask, is that my son, my sister, and my brother in law all had V500s from two different CPW, all on Vodafone PAYG, and all three phones are locked to Voda.

When my son switched to O2 for the free text bundles, he had to have it unlocked.

Hi,

I think it was the V525 for Vodafone - the V500 is exclusive to Orange - The reason the V500s (V525s?) were locked is because that phone was exclusive to Vodafone - it was not 'made' for any other network.

But, for example, you may see a Nokia '6230' for instance, in the O2 shop, and then you may see it in The Link on Vodafone, and then you may see it in Woolworths on T-Mobile etc - that's the type of phone that will be unlocked when you buy it (From the CPW only).

Basically, at the CPW, if you can get it on more than one network, it's unlocked. I believe it's been like that since the company started.

Well, im not completely sure. I think you would have to get confirmation off somebody else on here rather than just taking my advice.

I think that because Vodafone UK and Vodafone Ireland are the same company, then the sim cards should work in the same phone? As long as you get a Vodafone Ireland sim card and not any other mobile provider in Ireland such as Meteor, then it should work.

I suppose it would be the same if somebody here had an Orange UK phone and wanted to go to France and brought an Orange France sim card to use over there whilst on holiday or whatever.
The same with T-Mobile UK and T-Mobile Germany.

Whilst i believe this all sounds correct, i would let someone else reply to this post to confirm it before you buy an Irish Voda sim card

P.S - I also wouldnt trust your local market to take the phone away, as you may never see it again!

Thanks.

Ah, thank you, that explains it. Yes, they were V525s, not the 500s.
