It's a bit off topic I know, but while in America recently, I noticed a complete lack of widescreen TV sets. I was quite surprised, seeing as (so many say) Britain is years behind the Americans. Is there any reason why? On cable TV they have letterboxed films etc, is it that there 525 pictures would look awful zoomed out.... our 625 pics zoomed out for letterbox onyl use about 430 lines I guess...If you look on any website, like RCA.COM or SONY etc, there seems nearly no mention of them at all, except maybe for HDTV. It seems quite nice to think us Europeans are a bit ahead. (well maybe the Japs too I guess) hehehe

did you also notice that Americans have 60"+ sets too? Bloody cheap, apparently. But you could also say, that there is no accounting for taste!!

US is a huge market. HDTV is moving at a snail pace, but once it begins to take-over, they'll takeover again.

US decided to support expensive HDTV technology. This has led to very slow growth.

UK decided not to support HDTV and so we got stuck with much cheaper Widescreen technolgy and since dvd the uptake has been very fast (some sizes of widescreen tvs have started to outsell 4:3 tvs in the UK)

My Uncle came over from the US a few months ago and he was surprised to see that I had a Widescreen TV (especially as he knows how expesive the UK is compared to the US), he went in to many stores (Dixons etc) and was surprised by the amount of widescreen tvs on sale he, he said that no stores in his area sold widescreen tvs and that the only widescreen tv the local bigname store had was a really expensive HDTV one.

It seems that we're ahead of the states in this respect. I guess HDTV is the reason as you said. Only trouble with these widescreen TVs is that they're so damned big, deep and heavy!
