I've had the 100 almost 2 months now and so I thought it was about time to try out the dubbing to my ES10 ...... but now I'm at the point where I'm pulling my hair out and I haven't even got any!

I've already scanned all the threads on here, like this one http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...3&page=1&pp=10 and this one http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...d.php?t=345834 and found a lot of good advice regarding setting up etc from GG, Scorpio and the like but I still can't seem to get any joy.

My set up is
TV AV1 -> 100 AV1
100 AV2 -> ES10 AV2 EXT

The great thing about the 100 is that it SHOULD give you the option when recording to either send it to the HDD or with the Ext Link the option to send it to a compatible DVD Recorder which the ES10 is. For some reason the 100 has never given me this option and until this week I never worried about it until I was ready to archive. After reading the manual, it states you need a fully wired scart to be able to get the ext link connection ..... so I thought, Ahh thats why, even though I was puzzled as I thought all my scarts were fully wired! Nevertheless, off I toddled to Maplins today for some new Scarts. Still no joy, the 100 still won't give me the option to record externally. In any case, I thought I'd have a go at dubbing.

It works in as much as it goes through the dubbing process and switches on the ES10 and then switches it off when its finished but when i go into the Dir Nav of the ES10 and play it, there is audio but NO video just a black screen!? I've tried all the menu options I can think of on the TV, the ES10 and the 100 but still no joy. Is there something simple I am missing out and why wont the 100 recognise the ES10 as an option for external recording in the timer menu?

Anyone got any ideas, Guys/Gals? GG? Scorp? Lewisnt?

Hey, what about Nirm Any way, I use the facility quite frequently without a problem, suffice to say that you must make sure that the SCARTs are pushed in firmly (and I mean firmly!)- considering you have just purchased a new "fully wired" cable, the problem could be the socket of the TUCTH100... jiggle it about in the socket and see what happens, if it fails, then take the unit back for a replacement; the same could be said for your ES10 (however, to test this simply send a signal out of the ES10 AV2 to the TV SCART and see if you get a picture... if thats ok, then the TUCTH is likely to be at fault)... they are both still under warranty

Ooops, Sorry Nirm How could I forgot the person who pointed out the TUCTH100 bargain out to me in the first place Cheers mate, I'll try giving them a jiggle when I get home tonight and then I'll try the scarts they're definitely in nice n firm. Unfortunately the ES10 is out of warranty, I've had that some 15 months now ...... Doh! Like a dumbass I went out and got that before the PVR, but to tell you the truth, at the time I never even knew Freeview PVR's existed (much like 90% of the population I guess!) and probably wouldn't know now if it wasn't for this site.

Yeah I could try the ES10 straight into the TV, which worked before I had the 100 but what I can't understand (which isn't difficult as I'm not much of a techie) is that it plays back DVD's fine the way it is set up and it will also let me view other items on the RAM disc when in ES10 Direct Nav, but it's just this one that I've dubbed that has audio but no video. Like you say it could be a faulty 100, something on the dubbing side? I'm still wondering if its still some stupid menu setting that I've missed?

Could you check you settings?

PVR AV2 Output setting - set it to S-Video
[Menu] > [Picture & sound] > [Av2 Output] > There are only 2 options S-Video/Video


DVD AV2 Input setting should also be set to S-Video
As I don’t have an ES10 but another Panny DVD, I am assuming you can get to the setup menu by similar route e.g. [Functions] > [To Others] > [Setup] > [Connections] > [AV2 Settings] > [AV2 Input]. There should be 4 options shown. Make sure it is set to S-Video.

The key point is to make sure that the ES10 input is set to the same as the TUCTH output. Whether it's video or S-video will admiitedly affect the picture quality, but if they're not the same, you'll get sound but no picture. Which sounds awfully familiar.....

Assuming your ES10 works the same as my ES20D, you should be able to see the dubbing menu pop up via the DVD recorder while you're doing your setting up, if you've got all the AV menu options right.

On your other query - I can't access the REC field in the Timer menu at all. I'm sure it used to work when I originally had the machine, so perhaps they've dropped the feature. (I've never had any call to use it, as I've got a Freeview equipped 20D DVD.)

There's not an option somewhere that disables it is there? If there is, I might have done that, as I wouldn'thave wanted a recording to disappear off into the ether. I'll have a root around.

Yeah well mine's the same, I can't access that field either but I took it that once it recognised the EXT recorder it would give the option then to access that field. I haven't seen the option to disable it.

Maybe GG could shed some light on that one?

Cracked it.

Strangely, you don't have to access the field. You just use the Channel Up/Down buttons from anywhere in the recording entry and the REC field cycles through INT, EXT with subtitles, and EXT without subtitles. A rather odd way of dealing with it, I must admit.

Well done Mhairi and lewisnt .......... I really am that much of a dumbass!! I hadn't got the DVD recorder set on S-Video the same as the 100 ...... Doh!

And yes lewisnt you're spot on, if I go into the timer menu and then edit, I can toggle between INT, EXT and EXT NO SUB using the channel up/down button.

Just a minor niggle now, not a major issue but perhaps one that someone with the experience can point a finger at. When the 100 is dubbing to the ES10 during "Dub Now" (ie whilst watching the 100 and not on a timed dubbing as I haven't tried that yet), about 5secs before the dub is about to finish it comes up with a message on the screen 'STOP DUBBING !' Then when I go and watch what I've dubbed, the last 5secs of the dubbed programme are missing and replaced by whatever I was viewing at the time on the 100. Like I say, not a major issue as I can leave 10secs or so on the end of an edited programme before I dub it, but maybe someone has some thoughts or experience?

eff1guy, to send a recording to an external device, go into the Menu then into the Timer Menu. Select the Timer setting that you want the TU-CTH to send to your DVD recorder.
Press OK to edit it, then press Channel up ^ or Channel down in order to run through the choices. You will notice the icon at the end of your set recording change. The default is Int (internal hard drive) a graphic with lines and Ext (external device with subtitles) or the graphic lines crossed out in red Ext (External device without subtitles)
Also make sure that the TU-CTH is set to use EXT LINK by entering the dubbing menu, and check that it is set to EXT LINK on by pressing the green button.
Then set your DVD recorder to EXT LINK after making sure that you have enough space on a DVD to record the chosen programme.
The TU-CTH should then send the recording straight to the DVD recorder, switching it on and off at the correct time) and not to its Internal hard drive. If after you have made the recording, there is no picture just sound, and you have made sure that you have used a fully wired scart, and that both the TU-CTH and the DVD recorder are set to either S-Video or Video then I should contact Panasonic about it. The TU-CTH did used to do this, but mine has been fine since the last update. Have you got version 57?

Infact I think it maybe missing the first few seconds of the recording to begin with but then dubbing the correct amount of time that it has allocated for the dub and hence catching the last few seconds of what I am viewing. Maybe something to do with the 1sec start which I've seen a discussion on before with someone and GG. I know I've definitely got the ES10 set for quick start though!

To be honest, I don't find I can get accurate dubs very easily, because of the startup delay in the 20D.

I get the best results by dubbing excess start and finish time to a DVD-RAM, then editing that down to the program length. But I can't do that on a DVD-RW, let alone R discs. Annoying. The limitation is in the EXTLINK protocol, it seems to me. It sends a switch on signal to the recorder, but there's no facility for an acknowledgment to go back and say to the TUCTH "I'm ready now, start sending the dubbing information."

C'est la vie. We are talking about (relatively) cheap and cheerful domestic kit, not professional AV equipment.

You've already answered it eff1guy, you will just have to add a minute or two onto the end to get around this I'm afraid. Glad your all sorted as regards the blank pic.

When dubbing programmes from the '100 to my DMR-ES20, I ensure there's about 1m of padding at the beginning of the recording as I find that the '20 takes about 45 seconds to start up and start recording from standby with "quick start" (or whatever it's called) and 1 minute with "quick start" set off.

Can't say I've noticed any dubbing problems at the end of a dub (ie being cut short), but then I tend to end my recordings at the end of the credits, which I'm not that bothered about to be honest!

Yeah I can live with adding a bit of extra time at the start of the edited recording. It's definitely the first 5secs that it misses and not anything at the end but because the 100 dubbing process has allocated say 1hr 2mins 25secs for the dub then that's exactly the amount of time it runs for and hence when its missing the first 5secs it's giving me 5secs at the end of what I'm viewing at the time during dubbing.

lewisnt is spot on I reckon when he says there is no acknowledgement back from the ext recording device to say "OK I'm ready, begin dubbing". The 100 just begins the dubbing process straight away and however long it takes your recorder to react is the time you will be missing on your dubbed programme ..... in my case 5secs. It's always 5secs, i've tried it now at least a dozen times and its always the same.
