BBC 301 barcode.

Does anyone know why there is a "barcode" along the bottom of then interactive channel 301. It's beeen there for a few weeks now and doesn't seem to be a fault as I would assume they'd have gotten rid of it by now.

Please note that you are unlikely to see this if you have a widescrren set or your box etc is outputting a 16:9 picture to a 4:3 set since it will probably be trimmed off the bottom.

I am getting this too. Thought it was just my TV and/or box at fault.

is it like white and black thick dots?....if so, I get this on alot of the DTT channels

Probably something to do with this: http://informitv.com/articles/2006/05/24/barbcodetest/

Well, having read that link I can assure them that it is extremely visible and would appear to be more than 2 lines of the picture, although I have no means of measuring it. The other point is that if it is supposed to measure interactice channel use then why is it only on 301 and not on 302 as well?

It probably depends on your TV - mine for example shows nothing.

I did state earlier why you probably can't see it. Try changing the picture ratios on your TV and box.

I did. And nothing. Like I say, probably depends on your TV. some TVs no doubt show more of an overscan than others.

Here's a screenshot of the offending bars:

I suspect they're only visible on 4:3 TVs when using letter box mode as there's no overscan to hide the top and bottom of the picture.

I have noticed this on sky news also.

That "barcode" looks to me like teletext data. I often see this at the TOP of a picture, but why it's at the BOTTOM of this one is a mystery.

Either way it a broadcasters "fault"

It's at the bottom of the picture because it's NOT teletext data. Don't forget, although "analogue" teletext is capable of being transmitted within the DTT system, it isn't, instead being substituted by the MHEG versions. It's also NOT a fault. As stated above, different TV's show different levels of overscan. I'm not in the UK to check at the moment, but I suspect that my portable would show it, but my main TV wouldn't. Your mileage may vary.

It will depend on the TV - I tried it on my 4:3 portable and got nothing.

I find it annoying - altho I guess I am getting used to it. I wish they would sort it out tho! I have seen it since half way through the French Open tennis one day!
