My phone is an Orange fone. It got an Orange logo on back.
Is it possible to use a Virgin sim card on this phone?

I think I tried a Orange sim card in a Virgin phone a while back and it worked. Don't quote me on it though!

If your phone is a Nokia, it can be unlocked for FREE, by yourself, over the internet. You generate a code based on the phone's serial (IMEI) number, type in into the phone, and away you go.

Some other manufacturers' phones can also be unlocked this way, although Motorola and Sony Ericsson usually need taking to your local market.

Have a look at the sticky (top) threads here for further details.

Not all Nokia handsets can be unlocked using this method. But most Nokia software handsets can. Symbian handsets are much trickier to unlock. Some phones can only be unlocked by the netork.

EVery network offers free SIM cards from time-to-time. Keep an eye on this forum for threads relating to this.

SIM cards are very easy to get hold of, either directly from the network, your local supermarket or market trader. The cheapest source, apart from the free offers, is usually Ebay. Just check that you're dealing with a reputable source, and you shouldn't need to pay more than a couple of pounds for a new, sealed, SIM card. You might even get a memorable ("gold" or "platinum") number.

Doesn't seem to be any free Virgin SIMs on VirginMobile at the moment.

Their joining pack costs £10 with £5 credit and free p&p.

There's also Ebay where £4.99 gets you a SIM with £5 credit and free p&p. The seller also has a SIM with £10 credit for £9.99.
