What router?

Id like a router to use for voip. so i can plug a regular phone in and not have pc on. Id like to be able to change provider when i want. I am currently with voip stunt. Any suggestions?

I have read about the PAP2's but they seem in short supply. they were £19.99 locked. Is there any other "in" router that can be unlocked? or any other good voip router that aint locked. BTW I have cable Broadband.

Thank you

The PAP2 is an ATA not a router, this ATA plugs into your router, you then attach you standard corded or cordless phones, like you would with your regular phone line.

The not locked to Vonage versions are available on www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk, www.broadbandstuff.co.uk, www.dabs.co.uk and a couple of others I forget. These are official products, they aren't locked ones that have been unlocked, but originally not locked, so you can use any provider, they are dearer than the subsidised locked to Vonage ones. It is possible to unlock the Vonage ones, the later the revision the more there is to it.

The above sites also have a few actual routers with VoIP ports, they won't be locked, these will be proper unmodified devices. There may be only one or two available for use on cable.

I use a LinkSys router and a PAP2 attached to it (Sipgate & VoIP Stunt), this is fine, you just have to make sure you don't do heavy P2P when on a call as the QOS isn't there, having a router/VoIP combi on some does offer QOS.

Yeah i knew it werent a router, i had just woke up lol. I think the cost of the PAP2 unlocked is ridiculess. Cant beleive i missed out by not buying from comet. You confirmed what i thought, that there arent many cable voip routers about Its for my gf so she'll need a router too. Might aswell buy an all in one. So if anyone can recomend one? Ill go create myself a short list

Cheers mate.

You need to be careful with some of the 'QoS' functions on the combined routers. There was one I asked the manufacturers about (can't remember which one unfortuantely) before I bought my Linksys standard router. The QoS on the combined one worked by simply reserving bandwidth just for the ATA portion. i.e. Any time you weren't on the phone you still didn't get the most from your connection as it was being reserved just in case.

Ideally you want something that allows you to prioritise traffic rather than reserve bandwidth.

One of the best must be the Fritzbox Fon. Available from Sipgate but I bought mine cheap on E-bay and then changed it from Annex B Germany to Annex A uk. One just plugs an ordinary phone in 2 sockets. Excellent reception with regular firmware updates which are themselves easily installe via the software.

Fritzbox Fon are very good, you can have several accounts registered on the box, the ones however Sipgate are selling all seem to be for ADSL and have ADSL modems built in, the OP is on cable.

You can use it on a cable modem service though, see http://www.voiptalk.org/products/AVM...+Fon+WLAN+7050.
