Have BT lost the plot?

I've got a friend who's just setting up a new business. So he rang BT up, to see about having a seperate dedicated line installed at home, and to have broadband installed on it. They offered him their full package, which he was thrilled with, and he went ahead with it all.

They came to install his line 2 weeks ago, and all seemed to be going really well. They said there'd be about a week's wait for the broadband to be activated on the line, so he said that's fine.

Well, this was a week ago, and then there were various problems, with BT saying they were going to have to go back to the box in the street to see what the faults were. Well, he's just heard today that the line has got DAC's on it.

Well, to my mind this makes no sense. It was a brand new line installation, and was always going to have broadband on it. So why the hell did they put a line with DAC's on in the first place? Absolute madness!

They maybe was going to split the line at the DAC`s box so he got one line coming in but will have two phone numbers. I had to get a DAC`s tane off my line when I went broadband and that was a three days delay but dont see why it had a DAC`s if its a new line unless there was not enough lines on the BT poll to give him a new line and they used a DAC`s to split the line. If it was always going to have broadband BT should have knowen not to use a DAC`s. BT are usally good but have been knowen to make the odd mix up a very very odd once in a while.

That's not how a DACs works. You're thinking of Callsign there.

A DACs will give yhou 2 lines and 2 numbers.

No DACs splits the main line in two so you get two phonelines from one line.

Just to clarify what DACS is (I know, that wasn't the point of the thread) this is a website with some information.

No, DACs uses a physical pair to provide 2 telephone lines. It doesn't split a line into 2 lines as such.

I had a DACs on my line and I had to get it tane out so I could get BT broadband back in January. That ment a 3 or 4 delay in my broadbend being set up. I only had one line coming in from the BT poll but had a second phone number and it was like a second line for my anytime dial up for the net. Thanks for the link Heinz.

bt's network and managment of it has always baffled me. If something will stop broadband beeing installed as quickly as it needs to be then why not get everything right at the first (and what should be only) install.

I'm guessing the line wasn't "specified" for use with broadband, so the engineers installing the line whacked a DACS on it.

BT may have been able to do a simultaneous provide, where the ADSL is activated when the phone line is installed, at the same time. This requires the co-operation of BT, BTwholesale and your ISP (BT?).

It doesn't look like they did that there.
