DVDs - why not just play the bloody film!
My Dad (86 year-old) gets confused using a CD player. His freeview box is virtually beyond him. What chance of him playing a DVD?
All players & films - in my experience - don't just play the disc when it's inserted, no, you get the interactive features/options etc. I must admit, I sometimes need to stop & think before I can play the movie. Is there/can you, enable a disc to just play on loading on any machine out there? StereRowe |

Yes you can, provided the player supports the 'Auto Play' feature. I can recommend Auto Play for all ages as it is a merciful release from forced trailers and interactive menus that seem to run longer than the film itself...
As for players that support it, my cheap and cheerful Targa DP-5100x (LG made player) does, while my old Toshiba and Panasonic players didn't support it. This feature is unlikely to be mentioned in the specs so you may have to download user manuals to find out; or perhaps someone here can recommend a currently available player that supports it. |

AUTOPLAY is an unofficial feature that will not be supported on brand name players.
All it is ,is a way of bypassing the official DVD "user prohibitions". This prevents you from skipping warnings ,trailers etc that the dvd producer can force you to watch when the disc is authored. "UP" also force foreign subtitles to appear when English sound is selected on some European dvd's. But the handy bypass feature was only ever offered as part of a multiregion modification years a go with Sony players chipped by independents. I have not seen the mod offered on any players from the big names for years. But a lot of the el cheapo import supermarket jobbies have many features not found elsewhere like Divx support,MPEG4 playback, internal hidden region settings, and the user prohibition disable,to name a few. Unless you get one of these, the only way to do it is to copy a disc on your PC using copying software like DVD Shrink which removes all this type of thing |

The easyest way is to copy the films using dvd shrink, and take out all the titles. Then when you put the disc in any dvd player it auto plays !!!!!

Depending on how the disc is authored there is no way to get round the forced company logos/jingles,piracy ad,copyright warnings etc. Some companies will allow you to skip them one at a time, others will let you FF through each one,but most force you to watch them all before the menu appears. |

I finally get to point out a GREAT feature of the Philips DVDR610 (and I guess othere Philips machines)
You have a browser, which allows you to pick the title you wish to watch - and skip all the other 'features'. See, it is not such a bad machine

Some of my older dvd discs, you can skip the legal stuff by pressing "menu". But more recent stuff, you have to sit through it. No skipping or even FFW. Even VHS could FFW passed the legal stuff! Most discs go to a custom menu screen once the legal stuff has finished. This custom screen allows you to select different things on the disc, and the design changes for every disc. This is very confusing for people.
Some DVD machines return to the beginig of the disc (and film) when you press the STOP button. My first DVD player was like that. My 2nd machine - a Sony remembered where you were on the disc, but my newest machine (dvd recorder) goes back to the start when you press stop. There's progress for you. Dave |
