Flexible recording mode- Panasonic EH50

This function should enable me to record a DVD or TV programme to HDD and then dub to exactly fit a 4.7gb blank DVD at the best combination of quality modes.

However, I cannot seem to get it to work on commercially produced DVD'S. The FR( FLEXIBLE RECORD) option is greyed out and cannot be selected.

Can anyone advise if this is correct?

That's right. You CANNOT dub any commercially produced DVD's to the hard drive. As these are protected by numerous anti copy systems....

Not exactly true, you can't copy macrovisioned DVDs to a hard drive recorder. Quite a few DVD movies don't have macrovision and so can be copied.

Most New Line Cinema DVDs are not macro protected (Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, Final Destination, The Nightmare on Elm Street films etc)

Other films that don't have macrovision include,
Teminator, Spiderman, 2001, The Matrix trilogy.

Surely the CSS should trigger the recorder to tell it's copyright protected and not let you dub it to the hard drive.

Macro vision has only ever been to do with the video output. Rather than the data. Why would you ever use a dvd recorder to copy a dvd anyway...
