Could someone confirm that the Red Dwarf I DVD contains the 'new' version, as in the remastered edition of the first series with added f/x, etc?

No, the DVD features the ORIGINAL versions (I dont think the remaster was that popular with many fans).

I would still recomend it though as it is a very good disc with some great extras and menu graphics

they could have made the discs double sided and thrown the remastered versions in as well, would have kept everyone happy!!

Well yea, but the people who like the remastered version (ok a generalisation but hey) tend to have picked up the show in the last couple of series, the DVD will be aimed at the huge cult following that the show has - series 1 regularly broke 4 million viewers back in 88. Part of the charm of red dwarf, for me anyway, is the cheap and nasty feel it has to it. It's not quite the same when backed up by proper effects instead of a washing up liquid bottle, some sticky back plastic and string!

Thanks technoflare, that's great news. I can't stand those remastered versions, and I was sure that these would be on the DVD, since they released them on VHS a few years ago and simultaniously deleted the original releases. At least UK Gold kept showing the proper versions.

I agree entirely. I've watched Red Dwarf since it began, and enjoyed it right through to the sixth series in 1993. I didn't much care for the seventh season, but at least I made it all the way through - the first episode of series eight was enough for me. I don't like the fact that the full 'crew' have diluted what was a very enjoyable 'claustrophobic' comedy, along the lines of Porridge, Steptoe And Son, etc.

I think the menus on the DVD are a bit over the top - it takes forever to get to the point where you can actually select an episode.

Has anybody else noticed the spine of the DVD case? It has a small part of the 'Red Dwart' logo, which suggests that a collection of all the series will form the whole logo. Is this their way of forcing us to buy series 7 & 8 ? It probably also means that a box set will appear just after the last series has been released.

I notice though, that the Japenese episode on the DVD is the re-mastered one. Was this their way of sticking, in some way or another, a remastered episode on the DVD? I notice the picture quality on the Japanese ep is not very good, as it has the filmic look added, but also has been converted to NTSC and back so it's blurry, and it seems to have been zoomed in slightly as well.

I aggree with many that I also do not like the re-mastered episodes (though I admit to having two of the volumes of them- the 2nd part of series1 and the 1st part of series 2), it took away a lot of the feel of the show, especailly the low budget tackyness, which was what a lot of the early episodes were about, as well as replacing the classic model shots with CGI, which was also an upopular move (probabally one of the bad things about series 8 was the overuse of CGI, the model shots were part of the show itself and added to the comedy in a way).

BTW you can get past the OTT openign animation before you get to the menu- if you press the skip scene button it takes you straight to the selection choices.
