Old Nokia

I friend of mine gave me an old Nokia mobile 5110 with no SIM that he used to have on a Vodafone contract. I've had it for ages but my brother wanted a mobile so I said I'd give it to him.
I use a cheap Sagem mobile myself with a Virgin PAYG SIM as I don't make many mobile calls. Anyway I took out my SIM and tried it in this old Nokia and it says "SIM card not ready".

The friend who gave me the phone said it might be locked.

Will it work with a Vodafone PAYG SIM ( assuming you can get one) ?
My brother just wants PAYG.

If it's locked I don't think it's worth paying to get unlocked as it's probably not worth very much.

p.s. I'm a complete beginner with mobiles I don't even know how to send a text.

the 5110 is single band like the 402
402 is 1800mhz only
5110 is nearly always 900 mhz in uk although some were made on 1800mhz only in europe/asia/africa and some of these have found there way over here

02 = 900
vodafone = 900
orange = 1800
tmobile = 1800

The simple answer is a Nokia 5110 will only work on O2 or Vodafone

If it worked on vodafone contract it will definitely work on vodafone payg

New PAYG vodafone sims are currently £2 direct from vodafone website (or wait for a the next free offer if you can)

If you want to use it on O2 it may work or may need unlocking - if it doesn't work, you can get it unlocked for free using the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

As others have said it will never work on T-Mobile, Virgin or Orange, sorry.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll give my brother the phone and tell him to get a Vodafone PAYG SIM.
He wants an old phone that has big numbers as his eyes are a bit iffy now.

It's a pity it wasn't possible for any mobile to work with any SIM on any network.

I get the impression that mobile networks are constantly trying to make things more difficult for the customer rather than easier.

a 5110 is many years old, thats why it will only work on one network, you need to buy/use a newer dual band phone.

If I give him the phone which won't cost him anything and he gets a SIM that works PAYG in it he'll be happy. He doesn't want one of the new phones as he says the number buttons are too small and he doesn't want to pay a lot of money for a new mobile.

Yes, a Nokia 5110 will work fine with a Vodafone PAYG SIM.

I noticed earlier you were talking of using a Virgin SIM card - well unfortunately you can't do that with the 5110. BUT, take a look at this

CLICK HERE

This is only £17.99 and has large buttons and can be unlocked for free so that it can work on ANY network. But this is on Virgin - what you were after. It also comes with £5 credit, so in effect you're only paying £12.99 for the phone.

Just thought I'd show you. If your brother's happy with the 5110 then he'll be fine

Yes thanks for that. I have a cheap Sagem myself with a Virgin SIM card in it.
I like the idea of one phone that takes any SIM card.
