The Coral?
sacha
06-11-2002
I've just been given The Coral CD and although I had heard of them had never heard their music before, what a strange mix, almost 60s Floyd with The Doors and a Ska backbeat, different but is really growing on me!

Can anyone give me any info on them and has anyone seen them live?

Thanks.

Mmm, very good.

Skeleton Key reminded me of Violent Femmes with its chaotic guitars and a hint of The Blue Aeroplanes in the quieter, more melodious moments, imbued with a modern nu metalesque vocal to give it its dark feel.

Goodbye was simply kissed in glorious merseybeat.

"Why do I listen to sad songs?
To make me feel good
when I know I've done wrong?

Is it in this song?
I guess I'll know before too long."

I love The Coral. I hope they do well, their music is amazingly unique.

"Dreaming of You" is fantastic. It sounds a little like Madness. The song got to number 13 in the charts which is pretty impressive these days for a new Indie Band.

The Skeleton Key is great too, although extremely bizzare.

60s Liverpool influences, altho in 2nd half with psychedelic guitar sound from later in the 60s

Solid boned Skeleton Key
Opens the most intricate locks
Brother roll another one for me
I am shipwrecked on the rocks.

Will I ever return?
Will I ever get back?
Are the rocks too high,
Has the dust turned black?

Will you ever reply?
Will you ever get back?
Are the rockes too high,
Where you lured the sailors back?

Ah, but The Coral are not real scousers, they're wannabe's! They are from the Wirral, granted they sound very scouse if you hear them speak, maybe their parents are from Liverpool?!

Definate Liverpudlian influence in their music, everyone was banging on about them being the next big thing, but their album hasnt sold as well as I expected it to.
