i maybe soon parting with £600 odd on a new lcd telly. i'm drawn to the samsung r74 26". is it worth considering the more expensive sony kdl26 & if so what makes the sony stand out?

in the past i probably would have gone for the sony no questions but now other players like samsung are stealing the thunder

apparently, Samsung and Sony have the same pannels?.. the Samsung has some digital enhancement tech like DnIE, Digital Noise Reduction and Dynamic Contrast. Sony have similar techs in there screens.
In the Home Cinema Choice tests, both the Samsung and Sony came joint first, with the Sony scraping 1/2 a point in front of the Samsung.

so is the 1/2 a point really worth the extra ££'s? would an everyday user really notice the difference?

It's interesting that everyone concentrates on the picture but forgets the sound.

The poor sound quality of the R74 is it's most disappointing aspect for me. The idea of speakers pointing downwards didn't really work.

Having said that, the picture quality is excellent.

Very true, but i haven't heard an LCD screen that does give a decent sound... apart from one Plasma i saw once that sounded like a home cinema system!!!

I have mine on a Yamaha Home Cinema setup, via the optical out and the sound is many times better than the actual TV. (Although you have to turn the TV Volume down to 0 or else you get a echo sound like a Toilet!)

To be honest, no. That's a major gain of the Samsung.. the price of Sony equipment full stop is a little over the top, many better brands are much cheaper than Sony.. that's what you pay for.. the 4 letters S O N Y. I always felt a little ripped off when i bought Sony products, a lot of the price does goes on the name.

One drawback i found however was that the Samsung tends to give a little motion blur on Standard Definition Feeds, some don't notice, but its quite obvious to me. Recent Reviews have also pointed this out. tends to be horizontal movement such as fast scrolling writing etc. Still it is a very good pic.

but if the above fault has been noted on the samsung amongst recent reviews & not on the sony, then spending the extra on a picture that does not have the motion blur fault may be worth it afterall

The Sony will have it to, possibly to a lesser extent. all LCD's have motion blurring.
