o2 contract: communication error on sending mms
linuxgeek
10-07-2006
I have tried in vain to get my o2 contract sim working with MMS.

O2 tell me that they will not enabled it on my account, as I am on an old "genie" tariff.

I have tried downloading the settings from the website, activated them and confirmed they are correct from someone else who has a contract o2 account. I am stuck as to how to solve this. Possible solutions are:

1)Someone on here who works for O2, PM me and I can PM you my details: perhaps you could enable it for me on the quiet

2)Ring O2 up and threaten to leave i.e. ask for code to transfer number across

I have a sony ericsson t610. The phone can send mms fine using a PAYG sim card. The blue "GRPS" triangle appears to show i have GRPS reception. When sending the progress bar get 1/3 through.

If I try and connect to the "internet" using GRPS I get a similar error about GRPS parameters- but I dont really want to do this anyway.

I have double checked and find that in my O2 GRPS settings which O2 sent me, there is no ip address - these are the settings which the O2 MMS profile is using. I have manually added this, but still no avail.

Try sending the settings using the link below.

Some tariffs cannot have MMS. The option might be there for the person to press but it wont work. Do you know the actual name of the tariff you are on at all?

BTW how old is the sim card. Some of the very old sims don't seem to work with MMS/GPRS either.

some people will say the old tariffs dont support this and if they try the buttons it mite not work, if u know which buttons to press it can work or if u have live access to a certain system it can be added directly onto there, however this can cause problems in some situations, if you wanna PM me i can have a quick glance for you and see what needs doing but i'm not going to push any buttons for you, i can tell you what you need to say wen u ring CS.

What is legacy prop 56?

Edit: Physical sim card is very new - about 2 years old.

I am on Genie Off Peak 600 (SIM only)

Ah this could potentially be your problem. I am not familiar with that type of tariff. I assume it is most probably Leisure Time 600 (btcellnet offpeak plan 600 mins landlines and o2 £15 from memory) with the added bonus of better SMS allowance.

These really old tariffs are not allowed MMS. People on the Leisure Time 600 plan cannot have MMS, so if it is a very similar plan just the online variant that won't be allowed it either.

Thats right yeah. I get 600 off peak mins, unlimited wap and 600 free texts/month for £15.

So can you help me or is there no chance of MMS?

I'll try and find out tomorrow for you. I'd say the chances are slim, but you never know.

Why not just ring O2 and ask to transfer to a tariff that does support MMS?

@dawson
If they could offer me a similar deal for the same or similar price I would.

There used to be a Genie contract tariff when o2 were known as BT Cellnet.

Genie Off Peak 600
Rental: £15pm sim only (£20pm with handset)
Inclusive Calls: 50min per day (yes per day!) off peak
Std call peak 20p (50p x-net)
Std call off peak & weekend: 2p (35p x-net)
Inclusive texts: 600
Text costs: 10p

Is this the same tariff, linuxgeek?

I can find 6 Genie tariffs, but I carn't see the one listed above on the information sheets. Its on the old BTCellnet page though. I'll have another look tomorrow been very busy today so not had much chance to do any indepth research in to this.

Read through the tariffs again this morning. It is down as Genie Offpeak Plan. It makes no mention to MMS being compatible with the tariff.

I'll see if there is any way around this.

Got it sorted now thanks gary02 - mms and grps is working and yes that is the one - I quoted it from the "My bill" page so I dont know anything else about what it is called other than that...and it is the 50 o/p mins to "BT/Genie" phones and BT landlines/day. I am not sure where the 600 comes from - possibly the text messages!

Does this mean that I get free calls to the "New" BT mobile network too now?

Is anybody still on "BT Cellnet" tariffs?!
