Shoegazing/Dreampop revival?
Emzi

It is just me or is the 'shoegazing indie' genre of the early 90s making a comeback?

It seems that Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Lush, the Mock Turtles, Merc Rev, Thousand Yard Stare, My Bloody Valentine etc - and to a lesser extent - the Stone Roses and the Charlatans seem to be played on indie and rock music stations much more recently.

The Ride mailing list is bigger now than it was in the bands hayday in 1992, and The Mock Turtles 'Can U Dig It? tune is featured in the new Vodaphone ads and rumour has it that a 'Roses reunion is on the cards.

What are your thoughts on an early 90s indie revival?

20/30 somethings are an important marketing constituency because of the levels of disposable income and appealing to their nostalgic youth is one effective strategy to do so.

but omg, have we not outgrown The Scene That Celebrates Itself (and did I swallow all the press hype by having all the above records! ) - altho Im a sucker for Madchester and Hip Hop revivals .

I didn't buy into the whole 'shoegazing scene' - I discovered shoegazer bands when I was given a tape of MBV/Ride/Slowdve stuff in my first week at an F.E college when I was 17. I fell in love with the genre only to discover that shoegazing gods Ride had played their seminal gig in front of 10,000 fans FOUR MILES from my house (wait for it) TWO MONTHS before I discovered them!!!!!! Doh!

Rumour has it that, allegedly, Noel Gallagher insisted that Creation Records terminate both Slowdive and Ride's contracts as a condition of Oasis signing a record deal with them. Ironically, Ride's bass player Andy Bell - is now Oasis bass player!!!

It was the name attached to the scene created by the weekly music press, denoting floppy haired 6th formers playing loud dreamy guitarscapes with old heads My Bloody Valentine being the figureheads and Chapterhouse being the heirs to the thone - they all liked Cocteau Twins and....stared at their shoes through their fringes!

The last scene I sheepishly followed before having my world ruined by the cynicism of a music press trying to create something after Madchester and then Grunge out of the next 18 yr old hopefuls that managed a good single:'(
