Part of picture missing on TV
I have a Thomson blackDIVA television, a few years old, and I've sometimes noticed that the picture appears to be skewed over slightly to the left. It's usually not a problem, but sometimes bits of titles (like part of the "T" in "The") or even part of someone's head seem to drop off the side of the picture. Is there any adjustment I can do to sort this out? Or is a job for the TV man?

It could be RGB Shift. Many TVs have a function in the menu to adjust this.
Or else you've got your source set-up incorrectly. I'm not familiar with the model, but if it's a non-widescreen TV then you might be watching 14:9 or 16:9 safe material in centre cut-out mode. If it is a widescreen TV then you may have your source set to 4:3. If it's a Sky box then go to Service and find TV Settings, and chance the top option to 4:3L if you haave a square TV or 16:9 if it is a widescreen. If you tell us your source you've a better chance of help. |

I think the Matsui TUTV1 is a Vestel made box, and all Vestel STBs enable RGB by default. This is a good thing as the RGB picture on 95% of TVs is better than composite (CVBS).
There probably won't be an RGB shift option on your TV, but there may be an RGB channel which you can find simply by manually flicking through the available EXT or AV channels on the TV. Newer TVs with digital signal processing auto-detect RGB and automatically correct the left-shift, but with older TVs you have to select RGB manually. |

Thanks for your replies. I get the impression this is a well-known issue. If I have the input to the TV connected to the AV1 scart socket, which it says in the TV instructions is for "equipment outputting an RGB signal", should this deal with the left shift issue? Because it doesn't. Or do I need to change some settings on the Freeview box?

All modern TVs accept an RGB input via the first SCART socket - AV-1, EXT-1 or whatever it's called so unless you have a TV with more than one RGB capable SCART you have done the right thing. I think the previous posters were suggesting explicitly switching to the RGB channel using the TV/AV button (or equivalent) from your remote control. However....
I have to say having experience of RGB via 4 different TVs (Matsui, Hitachi, Philips and most recently a Wharfdale) I've yet to see RGB shift corrected by simply switching to AV-1 explicitly or even RGB (only the Hitachi and the Wharfedale have an RGB channel named explicitly as such - on all the other sets you can only switch to AV-1/EXT-1 and the picture is RGB by default if the source is). I've tried this on all 4 sets in the past instead of letting the set auto-switch the source yet still have left-shift problems on all 4. |

Are you saying that on the TVs you have with a manually selectable RGB channel the picture is still off-centre? If so, what is the RGB channel there for? On my old Sony TV with manually selectable AV RGB channel the picture is correctly centred; unfortunately RGB is unwatchably soft and looks terrible on that TV - makes left shift problems slightly irrelevant!Left shift is automatically corrected on Toshiba and Panasonic TVs made in the last few years, and I expect on the Sonys as well. If you switch settings between composite and RGB on the Toshiba the picture jumps to the left a bit, and then jumps back again. |

) but I tested the Wharfedale with my trusty old Nokia 9850T Freeview box in RGB mode. Switching the box on after switching the TV on, the TV automatically switched to AV-1. I pressed Info to get the Now/Next EPG and checked the position. I then cycled through all the AV modes on the TV (AV-1, F-AV, S-Video, AV-2) to get to RGB and the info bar was in exactly the same position. Pressing TV/Video on the Nokia box's remote took it out of RGB mode and confirmed a distinct shift of the picture to the right when it was taken out of RGB mode. For reference, the Wharfedale set is just 6 months old. |

Left Shift on Warfedale TV
I recently bourght a Flat Screen CRT TV in Argos (Warfedale £99) which has a definate left shift problem. I've only noticed this in the last couple of days and wil be taking it back tonight. Unfortunatelty i think exchanging it for another will have the same problem as I am not alone with the problem on this model of TV.

Is this problem a valid reason to return the Wharfedale TV to Argos? I've had it for a few months now but have barely used it. Now I've just hooked it up to Sky+ and it is really noticeable for anything in a 14:9 or 16:9 ratio. It's really bugging me and would like to get a different model if Argos will take it back. Or is this just something you have to accept with a budget TV, and not really a 'fault'?

Hmph, that's quite annoying. I realise I didn't spend a great deal on it, but I did pay more to buy a flat screen TV to avoid distortion issues, and it's just added a completely different problem. I wonder if it's worth chancing taking it back, but I'm not sure since it will be a pain to cart it down there. Thanks for the advice, anyway.
