Simple mobile phone ideas please
I know this should be in the phone section (it is). But I think the people who look in there tend to be thinking about super advanced camera-phones etc.
Some people in this section may have had a similar problem, so please help before it gets moved. My father called round yesterday quizzing me as to why his phone wasn't working. Its one of the Philips ones which O2 have withdrawn support for - I bought it for him as an Xmas gift many moons ago. He wants me to advise on a new one and I'm not really well clued-up on mobiles. All he needs is something which does the same job as the old Philips, a PAYG which makes calls. He mainly keeps it in the car for emergencies. Preferably with largish buttons, 'coz he has very big fingers. Any ideas gratefully appreciated. |

I've phoned him and said I could get him one via the internet by Monday, but he's insisting that he can deal with little buttons. Thanks for the suggestion. |

I agree with Cleocat, I have just bought my 68 years old F-I-L the phone and he loves it for the simplicity of it all he also said that he could hear it ring and the caller on the other end clearly, and that it was a good size and not too bulky his is PAYG You can get them in the Vodaphone shop also and he can hold the phone and use the buttons, the only problem I worried about was if he could see the screen as he wears different glasses to read with, I had visions of him changing glasses everything time he used the phone but that has not been the case. Also the Vodaphone phone where willing to gives us our money back if it was not suitable, but Argos won't as it does not come under there 16 day warranty |

Well, I took my old dad out to look at some phones this evening. He wasn't very impressed.
It's as if the suppliers (Curries/Comet/Tesco) are saying "mobile phones are only for young people with thin fingers and nobody else counts". There was nothing on show suitable at all. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably wander into town on Monday and buy one of them (probably the Sagem VS1 if they have one). He needs it by Tuesday so I can't buy on the internet. Funny how these stores all stock those 'normal' phones with inch square buttons but don't bother about mobiles. |

I'd definitely go for the Sagem VS1 if you can, it's specially designed for people who want phones to be as simple as possible. Another entry level phone is the Nokia 1110 or 1600, they're pretty cheap, very reliable and their batteries last for ages. They've also been designed to be easy to use by first-timers, though they're still not as user-friendly as the VS1. Quote:

Funny how these stores all stock those 'normal' phones with inch square buttons but don't bother about mobiles. To be fair to the shops, they can only stock whatever the manufacturers make, and the VS1 is probably the only phone model which is designed for people who find normal mobiles too complicated. I'm amazed that it's taken a company as small as Sagem to come up with this, you'd think one of the big ones would have made at least one model which has enormous buttons and a very user-friendly interface. |
