Nearly everything is via BT. BT hand out 98% of phone numbers.

You have to go back to BT to change your number.

BT only control allocation of phone numbers to BT customers. So if you are not a BT customer there is no point contacting them to change a number that is after all not one of theirs (even if it may have started out as a BT number).

You need to contact the service provider - ie whoever you pay line rental to - in the first instance. The only reason you would need to get BT involved is if that service provider cannot or will not change your number.

In which case you would have to cancel your contract with them and get a new line from BT. If you didn't bother porting your existing number back to BT then you would get a new number anyway.
