440 Timer recording
ByTheCringe
19-07-2006
I've had my 440 since yesterday and I'm testing my way through just the HDD side of things so far.

Am I going dolally, or is there
a) no way of setting up a manual timer recording from time A to time B, only by selecting a program from the EPG?

b) no way of padding the time for a selected program to record from and to?

Luckily, I didn't buy it for direct use in this way, but I must be missing something, mustn't I?

Most people call it doolally. 'Tis in fact, Deolali. An army camp in India to which troops were sent prior to embarkation on ship for repatriation to England. The full term is "Deolali Tap" tap being Sanskrit for "mad".

It was hot, apparently, Deolali.

I believe you can pad a manual timer event, but not an EPG timer event. I don't know how to do it because I don't have one yet. If you like I could loook i the manual, for you.

Mine is disconnected at the moment due to decorating going on, but from memory you set up a manual recording by pressing Timer Record then Green. You can also enter a Video+ code by pressing Timer Record then Red.

I don't think it does auto-padding. I think there is an option when you edit a scheduled recording to access the extended recording properties which lets you set end-padding but not start-padding. Seems a bit pointless though, as you may as well just edit the start and end times instead.

Ta for that, I shall remember the corect spelling!

I don't want to impose on you, I expect the answer is in there somewhere. But thanks anyway.

I'll try those, thanks.

You mean I CAN edit start and end times? That's all I would want.

I don't use the EPG, but I don't see why it wouldn't let you edit a recording scheduled from the EPG. Press Timer Record, arrow down to the one you want to edit, and press Green twice to get to the times (I think....)

EDIT: I've just thought, all this assumes you are using the Guideplus EPG. I've never used the Digital EPG so can't comment!

On my Toppy I just record the programme before and the one after, well, usually just the one after because there is that much blart on TV that things are far more often late than early. Then, if magically it hasn't overrun, I just delete the second recording unwatched.

Pain if you want to archive it but for normal stuff what the heck.

Aah... I AM using the EPG, but I would also like to do from time A to time B from the SCART input. I need to do a bit more experimenting, but I didn't notice it in the manual. Thanks.

Could do that, because this box lets me edit out anything afterwards. Thanks.

From what I can see in the manual, the only way of doing timer recordings from the Scart input seems to be to use the Guide+ EPG. The same seems to go for being able to edit scheduled recordings made from the EPG grid. The Digital EPG seems to lack these features altogether. Seems a bit odd but there you go.

Thanks very much, Cobson! I didn't look into the Guide+ guide at all. I opted for the digital EPG because I thought it would be the same as the Humax EPG, so one less thing to learn. But if I must use the other one to get anywhere, then I must... Agree it's most odd to be so different.

You don't need to use GuidePlus - I use the digital EPG. You can select the progs to record using the EPG and then edit them - use the HomeMenu, Recording - you will then see a list of progs that you have scheduled to be recorded. You can then change the start or end time etc. There is also an option to pad the end time in 10min blocks (and it warns you if this will clash with another recording).

I think you also asked about just creating a recording from scratch without using the EPG. Again, use the HomeMenu, Recording, Manual (green button) to do this (not tried myself).

Be careful you don't delete a recording though - the red button changes it's meaning from being 'back' to 'delete', I deleted Casualty by mistake and had to re-schedule it

Thanks for that, I must try all these things - bit busy getting Humaxes set up at the moment. Nothing seems to be in the manual though - with 152 pages I thought it would all be covered.

I used digital EPG cos my LCD TV has built-in Freeview digital and I plugged the aerial cable into 540HX and then from 540HX to tv as I usual record any programming via Freeview with digital EPG cos I used with subtitles -- I leave Guideplus off (only one is downstair which has link with Sky digibox via G-link with GuidePlus).. it still working fine for me.

Seems that they just forgot to mention this in the manual! It did seem odd!
