The exact same thing happened to me yesterday.
I ended up reformatting my computer.
However I would just check that the Windows firewall has not switched its self on.

I wonder if its something on the actual Itunes program

I had this problem when I was messing with my friends iPod. I thought it was freezing the computer, but actually it was just taking ages to sort itself out. After leaving it for about 5mins (which feels like a life time when your sat watching it) it sorted itself out.

Most seem to freeze iTunes for up to 30 seconds depending on the speed of your computer.

iTunes 6 is the most buggy piece of software I have on my laptop, but i HAVE to use iTunes for my iPod. When I plug my iPod into my computer it does freeze for around 10 seconds and then iTunes opens automatically but it is not frozen at this point, although it's jerky.

I've never had a problem. I just launch iTunes, plug my iPod into my Apple Mac, wait a few seconds then the icon appears and it automatically updates.

You don't HAVE to use iTunes. There are alternatives:

* Ephpod (Linux, Windows)
* Banshee (Linux)
* Rhythmbox (Linux)

etc etc.

The only time I have experienced a PC crash with an iPod connected is when the iPod's Hard Drive is broken.
