Well, what a week for our 710. Not just the usual lockups, but now a spate of recording into oblivion - well ok, 8 hrs or so for a variety of programmes and channels; always beyond the epg end time. Latest one being tonight with the Xfactor recording lasting several hrs after it should've stopped.

We ought to make this thread compulsary viewing for Sony

Wouldn't make any difference ... would just induce Goldfish memory syndrome ... 3 seconds later they would have no knowledge of ever seeing it or any faults!!

my 710s been acting up this weekend the names of the recorded shows have been replaced with just the channel name. and when i recorded the daily show it continued to record till i spotted it the next day. funny how people are having the same problems at the same time.

Spooky - my 710 is behaving the same. The EPG is OK, but recordings are hit and miss as to whether they display the programme name or just the channel, date & time.

When this has happened before the EPG was not being updated, but it looks fine at the moment.

However the same solution - reboot!

Me too.
This week for the first time ever my 710 is simply titling programmes with channel names, and I too am having extended recording times for no reason.

Sony sort it out you useless idle fops.

Just to add my bit. I did have lock up problems, but it hasn't done that for about 4 months now. However it has recently started putting just the channel name, eg BBC1 etc, instead of the programme title, and occaisionally, failing to cease recording at the appropriate time.

Another thing that i have noticed. I am sure when I first had this machine back in February, each programme I recorded had a little picture icon displayed in the Title List. This doesn't happen any longer. Has something changed, or have I switched something off in the menus, or am I imagining the picture icons used to be there?

While in the title list press the 'Tools' button and select 'Display Thumbnails' from the menu that appears, then press enter

Same thing here this evening. Set it to record Planet Earth (21:00 - 22:00) and I noticed at 22:30 that it was still recording, so stopped it manually. The title of the recording just showed BBC1 and not the programme name.

Maybe this is actual evidence that we can show to Sony or their repair agents of an actual fault. Unlike the lockup problem which goes away when the machine is switched off and on.

I reported this locking up problem in April and the advice to pull out the mains lead worked. In May I bought a 6 x 13amp socket outlet with surge protection from Maplin for the TV, DVD player, VTR and HXD710. Since then, I have not had a lock-up. It may be coincidence but it may be worth trying surge protection to see whether to see whether it solves the problem.

Also when I want to erase several old recordings is that I don't rush the job. I suspect that the software can't cope with too many instructions one after another. Like Pooh, maybe it's a bear with very little brain!

My unit is also attached to a surge suppression strip. I also do not believe the issue is related to the speed the commands are issued at but rather as I've stated before and other have eluded to since, the issue is caused by a memory buffer that is not cleared properly and gets to a state where the buffer is full and cannot accomodate any more instructions at which point the machine appears to lock.

I do think that not to operate it to quickly helps with not causing so many lock up but it doesnt solve the prob completely.

There are a number of threads discussing this. I'm having this problem too. Its too much of a coincidence for this problem to have only suddenly appeared affecting many owners. It points to an EPG related problem IMHO.

I'm intrigued to see Naranek's post in a separate thread ... re the titling issue.

Quote:
“... having read everyone else's suggestions of resets, restarts etc, it occured to me that no-one appeared to have actually asked Sony what the problem was!

I've done it this morning, and am told it's a known problem, which they're currently working on an over-the-air fix for.”

Did I read that right ... Sony have acknowledged a problem?

Thanks for that ... sorry for being a lazy bu99er - I will search next time

Well I wonder if Sony are admitting being aware of the titling issue only or both that and the lock-ups? hmm a start at least then maybe? Although having said that when I bought my IDTV it had a couple of bugs I was promised updates for several times and it took well over 8 months for the update to finally be available

No problem Was wondering the same as to whether Sony are now aware of lockups or just the titling. Hopefully a start as you say. If we can get a firmware update there may be some hope afterall.

If Sony do an over-the -air fix, what's the betting all our machines lock-up whilst they're doing it!

I don't get extended recordings, but I do get meaningless channel names, however, this was after a power cut.

What lock up? Faulty?

You're all operating your equipment incorrectly, according to the poster in this thread
