My 910 seems to have upgraded fine.

Hi, I was about to download the upgrade but am glad I never going by the past few comments.
The Sony No is 08705 111 999 it will cost you £0.08 a minute which is cheap for a phone call to "India" in the midlle of the day, and if you are really unlucky you may get the supervisor J Dasilva who hung up on me before I had time to finish my complaint, trying to get some sense out anyone at "Sony UK" is just impossible. If you really want to waste your time try writing addressing it to Lara McNamee or C Chester both at Jays Close.

My 910 has upgraded ok. (Multi-region)

I've just cold booted a 710 which had already received the update today (held power button down for 15 secs), after performing normal recovery process it's still working fine.

It sounds like I've been lucky - I'm concerned that there are so many reports of 710's failure to start following update. I've updated PC's and servers at work many times; key part of the process was to thoroughly test updates on a variety of machines (normally IT group's machines) before we rolled updates out more generally. Not least we developed comprehensive backout plans to enable the changes to be readily reversed without loss of data if the new version of software proved to be problematic.

I can't help but have a bad feel about this one - it may well be impossible to revert to old version of software (or a corrected version) by 'on the air broadcasts' for the Sony PVR's which now fail to start up. I doubt Sony will want to stretch to individual engineering visits for those PVR's out of warranty (although they should given that their update appears to be 'buggy'). I suspect those affected will be talked through a complete hard disk reset which then presumably would reformat disk and re-install manufacturer's default software version; of course this would lead to loss of stored recordings. Not nice.

Two further questions to establish a pattern:-

1. Did those who are experiencing problems have any timer recordings set?

2. What time did those who are experiencing problems upgrade their machines?

If it's significant, then my 710 that updated OK, had no recordings set in its memory. My download occurred between 10:00 hrs and 10:30 hrs on July 30th.

My parents' 310 was updated OK between 13:00hrs and 15:00hrs, again no recordings set.

2. Machine was locked when I returned home @ 5.00pm - hard reset didn't work, now just have the flashing "timer rec" LED


Just called the Sony help line - the guy was fully aware of the problem and agreed they had a problem to solve. Took my details and said a "supervisor" would call me back but there was a long queue (that was at 10.00am).

We may now be onto something with timer events, but it's too early to be certain about anything.

Can anyone else who has tried to upgrade now please post:-

1. Did you have any timer recordings set?

2. What time did the machine install the upgrade? and

3. Was the upgrade successful?

For the record:

My successfully upgraded 910 had one timer recording set (a recurring one for Saturday).

I put it on CBeebies about 1:15, left it there for about an hour, turned it off and on, and it had upgraded.

It previously had the .02 version.

Upgraded 2 x 710's yesterday:

1) Yes, several unique and recurring recordings set on both PVR's.

2) PVR 1 - around 1200 hrs; PVR 2 - around 1700 hrs. Downloads may have occurred earlier as I set to Ch 071 earlier that morning but above are reset times.

3) U/g from ver ...02 to ...03 successful in both cases.

Hi i haven't read this thread for months till just, So a new software update is available for it lets hope this one works. I just leave the dvd on bbc1 and it will auto update ?

Anyone with a locked machine tried getting into the service menu and seeing if there's anything that can be done from in there - ie factory reset?

Hold down the three keys Rec / Rec Pause / Rec Stop for ten seconds or so, I'm told. I've not tried this myself! On older machines, you held keys down whilst applying the power, so if the former method doesn't work, try the latter.

Thanks for the tip. Tried holding down the three buttons and then the same again whilst applying the power but no luck, it just displays the welcome message for about 20 seconds and then goes off. I've rang Sony this morning and I'm told they're investigating and someone will get back to me.

This week's update is on Mux B and you should tune recorder to ch 71 (Ceebies) to receive update during the day. To receive same update in the evening tune to ch 9 (BBC4). Download schedule.

Thanks i turned mine onto Ceebies a couple of hours ago and left it on but nothings happened yet i will leave it on bbc4 tonight if nothing happens. Guess what i turned my dvd on after reading this thread about a new update for it and it locked up straight away when turning it over. I love Phoney products lol

Any parents here who watch Ceebies with the kids ? i turned the dvd onto Ceebies to get this update and found myself watching it for a few mins to see what happened and omg it drove me (potty) no pun intended. Its nowonder they say to much watching kids tv is bad for kids its Ceebies fault lol.

Do you mean that you've tried putting the machine into standby and then switching back on again?

If nothing has happened after that, does it mean that they have pulled the upgrade because of the problems?

Has anyone heard back from Sony yet?

I logged my call at 10.00am this morning and have not yet been contacted.

Sorry i forgot to turn it off and back on again for it to take effect i will check it now. I just turned it off and back on again and its still on 02 version.

Quite honestly, given the problems recorded in here you were crazy to try it !

Looks as if Sony have (quite sensibly) hopefully pulled the update.

I would think they've got a huge problem on their hands, first to identify what the problem is, and secondly how to implement a fix for all the 'doorstops' across the UK.

I wouldn't think they'll be ringing back today !

Looks like people will have a difficulty in getting any sensible response from Sony. I tried the call centre on the premise of seeking advice regarding what was happening with the upgrade and whether or not it had been pulled...and whether or not I should disable upgrades meantime.

They initially denied that an upgrade had ever been broadcast (notwithstanding the content of the DTG website and what has been said here) and the latest information was simply as stated on Sony's website (i.e. an upgrade is being worked on).

Eventually he backtracked and conceded that they (the call centre) had no information about it at all! He acknowledged the ongoing problems, but stated that he had not received any intimation of an over the air upgrade causing a system failure.

Given that Sony's website hasn't been updated, is it possible that the DTG went off half-cocked and broadcast the upgrade without the final say-so from Sony? And that it has now had to be pulled as a result?

Some people have upgraded to the 03 version and not had a problem with it though ?

I spole to the Sony help line at 9am and, as another has described, I was told that there have been no updates for the 710 as there are none on the Sony site. I persisted, although the chap seemed not to believe me, and I pointed out the DTG site and the chap looked at it but said they have no information from Sony on this.

Shortly later, after reading here, I spoke to them again and they confirmed that they are aware of a problem and a supervisor will call me back. I was called about 20 minutes later (that's pretty good service) and the chap said that they are well aware of the problem and are now working on finding out what has caused it and what can be done - he suggested that an Over The Air fix is unlikely to fix it - I'd certainly agree with that. I have left it with them.

A couple of other interesting notes - the "Service Announcement" on the Sony website about the 560/860 series, that also slightly mentioned the 710/910 has been taken down - I'm sure it was there yesterday.

... and to add my info on when and how it happened. I am on the Hannington transmitter, mine was left on the CBeebies channel from early morning and my wife tried to restart it at 11am, when it was found to be "locked". Although just before she restarted it everything was working, i.e. she was able to go into the System Menu and see the current version (still 02). It seems it went wrong during the restart - is that when it actually writes the new code to the EPROMs and/or disk?

... and yes I had a good number of timer events set.

Updated my 910 sucessfully.

Had to un-hide Cbeebies channel to do so and , as a precaution auto-tuned the channels just before update time. Had a number of recordings set on machine. Checked update after 3 hours - still ver. 2. Having read this thread, nervously cold restarted machine and all went OK although it seemed to take ages.

Could it be my channel update that saved my 910 from becoming a doorstop ?
