I'm sure "Which" magazine would also be interested - as they gave the 710/910 a very good write-up recently.

To start off the information sharing, what software/loader/hardware versions are in our machines? I'd be especially interested to compare this with people who claim to never have the problem....

They have been to swap mine today not set it up yet but ill let you know how i get on with it hope its ok now. when taking my other one out an rf leed came unplugged from whatever it was in n i cant figure out where it went now the one end of it was still in the rf out on the dvd so im guessing rf in on the sat receiver ?

It was out my aerial booster all seems to be ok now. My software, loader, n hardware info is the same as yours rad and its the same as the last dvdr i had so are they all the same versions ? Are they doing newer versions ?

Keep us informed - mine hasn't played up for over a week - its just one of those really infuriating problems!

Guy from local repair shop called back. He said Sony Technical had no resolution and there was no new software/firmware.

Just what I wanted to hear - not!

It would be interesting to see if people with the new 560's (and in the future I guess 760's and 960's) get the same problems.

When i got my dvd n started getting the probs last week i looked up the problem on the net but couldnt find anything on it. so its prolly not that big of a problem just seems like its happening alot cause a few of us here found this post. Still not had a prob with this new one i have.Think i counted 13 people in this post i guess were the unlucky 13 lol.
Since problems started has anyone had any luck with getting them repair or exchanged/refunded if its under guarentee still ?

FWIW, and touch wood, my 710 hasn't locked up since a week ago when I had it powered off overnight (about 10 hours), although I also removed the leads I had connecting it to my hifi. My theory was as mentioned on another thread, that there might be a build up of static - certainly if I touched the top surface of the unit I could sense a tingling - although this is completely unscientific guesswork. I notice incidentally that there is no earth connection on the three-pin plug ... is that usual?

So given that it's working OK, as yet I haven't taken it for repair. It's too late to get it replaced by the retailer (more than 28 days old).

BTW, I mentioned this forum to Sony's email support. Their response (Reference 173505944)

They should pretty much all be under warranty still - I got one of the first units and that was in Oct last year - but given the story that's emerging, there seems little point in getting an exchange.
I'm off so see a sony service centre on friday; not so much becuase expect any good news, but because I want to be able to go back to sony saying I've done what they suggested and it hasn't helped...

2-pin mains leads are perfectly normal on most domestic electronics these days - you'll probably find your TV doesn't have an earth wire either!

I've been trying to figure out what the common factor could be - so far it seems:
- there is only one firmware version, so it isn't that.
- products of all ages are experiencing the problem - so it isn't a batch-related issue.

My unit is multi-region; does anyone have the problem on a region-2 unit?

My experience was that the unit worked fine for a couple of months before the problems started; maybe there is an issue with how it manages its memory? (PCs sometimes get this issue) - does anyone know if the unit is unplugged for serveral hours, does the problem go away for serveral weeks/months, or does it come right back?

Do we have anyone on the forum who hasn't experienced the problem, who can share info with us?

I bought a 710 in March this year (not multi region) and as soon as I took it out of the box and switched it on, it locked up. Only a reset would fix the problem, but then when I put the unit onto standby, it would lock up the next time I switched it on so that I would need to reset it again. It did this every time. I returned it to the shop and they replaced it for a new one which has worked fine for a few months but has now froze on numerous occasions since, although it's not done it for a few weeks now.

My unit is slightly older

I got the same email from Sony - so I've now taken my 710 to my 'local' service centre (an hour's drive away) who have taken it i for testing. Do I expect them to fix it? Not really, but I can hope.
Anyway, the unit is 10 months old so I wanted to get it in before the warranty runs out. That way, even if they don't find anything wrong this time and it locks up again later, I can insist the problem was reported under warranty.
Since Sony aren't stupid, I can only assume they are aware of the issue but don't want to bear the cost of fixing it when the product is going obsolete anyway. This attitude will only be overcome by continued pressure, and preferably public pressure (eg published letters in magazines, consumer programmes, etc).

Still not had a prob with mine since it was replaced so my guess is its a fault thats in some or developes with some of them over a period of time. The shop where i brought mine from phoned me today not sure why i phoned them back when i returned but i got no answer and anyway i phoned them about 5 times when i was having the probs with it in the frst place and was told i would be phoned back every time but never was so if they think im gonna keep phoning them still they can errm how can i put this in a family group (Naff off) lol.

Well that interesting, looks like reading from this forum that none of us have had a lock up-- I haven't(touch wood) haven't had a lock-up for over 2 weeks now.
Be interesting when the lock-ups start again if bekko has a lock-up on his replacement machine.

No lock ups in the last couple of weeks.

Its been over 2 weeks since my last lock-up as well. We had a power-cut last weekend which lasted a few hours and the box came back afterwards with no problems.

I think someone at sony must be pressing a button that freezes them all at the same times lol.

I've been reading this thread with some interest. I have 2 Sony RDR-HXD910 boxes, which I've had for a time. In both cases, the boxes have the following software:

- software v1.00.00
- loader v1.00.00
- hardware B-030-00A-01

This would make sense as I've had my boxes pretty much since they were first released. So far, I've had one 'lock-up' on each box and some other odd behaviour, but thus far, I think that I've been lucky.

Lock-up wise, I reckon that it's something to do with the BBC channels. Here's why I think that. A while back, I was recording an episode of Dr Who on one of my boxes, and I was also recording it on my old Sony RDR-HXD500 DVD recorder for a friend. Anyway, on the 910, I knew that something was wrong because some 20 minutes past the end of the recording, the timer light was still on (only Dr Who had been set in the timer) and I could hear the machine working. On trying to wake it up, I got the same go-slow problems mentioned in other posts and after about five minutes I got fed-up, held the power button down and reset the box. The recording was lost. Thinking I might have a box problem I played back the DVD recording made on the 500 box on my second 910. The recording played fine, but when I tried to stop playback post viewing - nothing, the controls had locked and I had to pull the mains power to reset the box. That's the only lock-up so far, touch wood.

I also had a period of weirdness whereby the 910s and my 500 recorder would take an absolute age to power-up. Instead of the ~20 seconds or so, it would take over 5 minutes before I could use the machines normally. This behaviour persisted for several days then cleared itself. I found that the delay would be caused by powering-up after using a BBC channel - if I left the boxes on say CH5, the delay was far less noticeable.

It's very odd/coincidental that Topfield PVR owners are having problems watching BBC channels - selecting a BBC channel causes the players to re-boot, apparently.

What I find a little concerning here is Sony's response thus far. I can't believe that they don't now about the problems reported here. If you believe other postings elsewhere, their 800 Freeview receiver is due a software update shortly to fix some MHEG issues. Given the commonality between the Sony hardware it's surprising that 710 and 910 boxes aren't also set for an update.

Overall however, I don't seem to have many issues with my Sony kit. However, I don't use MHEG/text services on them, I seldom use the 7-day guide, I set all of my timers manually and I don't have any external devices connected, other than to my old 50 DVD recorder. The only issue that seems to arise now and again is that after updating the EPG at ~04:30 every day, the unit fans/disks continue to run for several hours. A reset by pulling the mains power seems to sort this out for a couple of months before it happens again.

Yes I have also noticed that it seems to spring into action in the early hours of the morning and asumed its the epg being updated and it always goes off at 07:00, what i don't understand about this is why it takes so long to update the epg, theres not that much info there for hours of whiring away.My Dads 910 does the same
And yes again, when I 1st had it it would sometimes take ages to boot up and run but it hasn't done this in a long while(touch wood) still nearly 3 weeks with out a lock-up so i'll wont complain!! & bless my lucky stars

The BBC channel idea may be worth exploring.

I have had lock-ups (go slows) when changing channel to/from a BBC channel - it was OK until the channel change.

Also noted issues with incorrect switching between cbeebies/cbbc and BBC3/BBC4 at 7.00pm - on channel 71 but displaying BBC4 then a go-slow when changing channel.

Hmm, yes, the software updates are sent out on BBC1's mux. Not that there have been any for the 710 afaik, but I wonder if the box was getting confused by one of the other upgrades that's being broadcast?
