Its been almost a month since my 710 locked-up (touch wood) - how are all the other machines discussed in this thread behaving?

I've been using the new RDR-HXD560 for a month.
Bad news, it's just locked up last night night. Any thoughts I had about the new 560 and 860 models being better in this department have now just vanished.

My sony 710 started off freezing up but now workes fine. maybe they get better with age. they are very good when they work and im thinking of getting an 860 multiregion too.
Just had another lockup today 11/09/06, that's the first for about 4 weeks. Anyone else had one today?
That's interesting very interresting, just had a lock-up about 20:32 on BBC1 watching Rogue traders!!
Is this a pattern forming-virtualy none of us has had a lock-up in weeks and suddenly some of us are getting them again!
Anybody else had a locky?

im hardly watching freeview these days just sky, but i was watching Eastenders on bbc1 tonight on sky and the screen froze up on me.
And mine - watching BBC2 just before 9pm - loaded a DVD to finalise it, hit the tools menu and FREEZE ...

No!- nether do I, theres most certainly a pattern here, Im near Cambridge and get my Tv transmittions from sandy heath.

I don't believe it! Mine has just done it again, that's twice in one evening. I'm in the midlands on the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.

I came downstairs at 9pm, after reading the last few posts here, only to find my RDR-HXD910 had done the same.
The timer was set using the EPG for:
'Working Lunch', 'Emmerdale', 'Corronation Street', and 'Tonite with Trevor Mcdonald'.
It recorded BBC2's 'Working Lunch' successfully at 12.30, but after it has recorded the remaining programmes still tuned to BBC2, with 'Prog 0' listed as the channel name.

Notice the times are out by a few minutes.
This is exactly the same behaviour I've experienced on both my 710's. It would seem to be related to the BBC multiplex, as it's only ever happened following timed recordings of 'Working Lunch'.
I can't believe Sony not knowing about this problem.
There's not much hope for the new RDR-HXD860 either, since an RDR-HXD560 has already locked up after just four weeks of ownership (see my earlier post).

I'm in the midlands and use the Brierley Hill transmitter which is a relay of Sutton Coldfield (well it was in the analogue days, not sure how they distribute the digital signals).
I also record working lunch (!) and I still think there is an issue with BBC muxes.

Hmmm. Yesterday evening my Sony 310 DVD recorder crashed as I changed channel from ITV1 to BBC2. The channel change was accepted, then all I got was a blank screen. The unit responded to a power off, but hung with the message 'POWER OFF' on the front panel. Needless to say, I had to power-cycle the box to fix this. However (and I need to check) my 910 boxes were recording ITV1 at the time, and they seemed to be behaving correctly, although I haven't actually checked the recordings yet.
This is rapidly becoming too much of a coincidence in my book. Everything thus far (including my experiences) points to an issue on the main BBC mux. Has anyone contacted the BBC about this yet? According to the DTG website, software for the Humax 9200T is available this week. Could our Sony boxes be choking on that I wonder?

Mine locked last night for the first time in months. I'm in south Manchester / North Cheshire. The time was about 19:15
I'm tempted to turn off the option for "digital software upgrade", based on Sony's current track record for providing updates I won't be missing too much.
I did that after it kept locking up when i first got it, then it only locked up about four times the week after that. When i got the replacement one i turned off auto software upgrade straight away and still no lock ups but as i said in my last post im hardly watching it these days only sky tv.
something else i noticed last night just before the locky was when i tried to goto bbci it wouldn't, my dads 910 wouldn't pause live tv and later around about 20:30 (same time as me) his also locked up.
I think this confirms that there probaly is a software error on these things, does anybody know if anybody else with different machines are experiencing the same thing as us

I think that my money is on either (a) a change of the MHEG stuff on the BBC mux causing a problem for Sony kit (b) some boxes choking on firmware updates not intended for them or (c) a design factor/software bug that's affecting the entire Sony range.
It will be interesting to see if Sony respond to the problem for their recently-released recorders. If they do, it's a fair bet that it's a software problem.
All of my Sony kit, with the exception of the 310 DVD recorder, is out of warranty, so I'm hosed if it's (c).
In real terms my kit has been reasonably trouble-free thus far, so I'm not in a position to send a message to the BBC, but I think that given that Sony won't even recognise the problem that's probably our (collective) remaining option for those that can't return their kit as defective. My sony 710 went funny yesterday during look north 6.30 on bbc1 the picture and sound were miles out of sink. did not think anything about it, but noticed that tonights look north has been replaced by bbc london news in the EPG. strange as i am in West Yorkshire. how can we all get problems on the same night?
May be a problem caused by the weather - in another freeview forum "Tropospherics? Here we go again?" ... last set of problems coincided with the "summer".
I'll join the club. My 710 locked today after several weeks of good behaviour. It EPG recorded BBC1 "Evacuation" at 5pm, followed by phantom recordings of the 6pm and 7pm broadcasts, both showing "Prog 0" on the Title List and 0.1Gb size. Noticed that it had locked because it was not recording the next prog we wanted on another channel.
If the new boxes have the same problem, that (sadly) has to be good news because Sony will get more complaints and may just have to look into it.

My Sony 310 crashed again yesterday, on a channel change from BBC3 to Film4. This time, I got the new channel's banner, then nothing, as before.
If this happens again I'm going to call my retailer to see what he can do. I rely on these boxes for time-shifting, and if it turns out that they can't do that reliably, then they need to go.
All in all, this is now getting pretty annoying.

Phoned Sony this morning (spoke to "steve") and obtained a call reference (174860144) so I can follow it up in the future.
I detailed the events of monday night when so many machines all over the country had the same problem.
Same responce as normal; nothing logged on the system and no known problem. Suggested I contact a local service centre (!).

What a lame answer! What are you supposed to do if you want to watch/record something on a BBC channel, FFS? Buy a different brand of kit?
This latest response from Sony only confirms (for me, at least) that the company IS aware of the problem and is either (a) working on a fix or (b) hoping that the problem will just simply 'go away'.
I suppose that the random nature of the failures isn't helping, but all Sony has to do is gather information from this forum to get a fair approximation of what's actually happening.
I'm seriously disappointed with Sony in regard to this problem. I'm not sure that they'll be getting my business next time that I want to buy some new kit. Pity. Customer loyalty is only achieved by helping your exsiting customers when problems arise so that they'll come back to you in the future when they need something else. It would appear that Sony don't think that way .....
