I'm thinking about signing up for TalkTalk (not the broadband though, I've seen the horror stories)

I'm looking at Option 2 and it looks pretty good.

I've found numerous threads slamming talktalk for its broadband and customer services

But what is its landline service like?

No-one seems to criticise the phone service.

BT charge £11 per month too on BT together 1 (paying by Direct Debit).

With BT you also get the ability of cheap daytime calls to 01/02 numbers (3p each using 1899 - that's the total cost of the call! With Talk Talk it costs 2.85p per minute and a minimum 5.25p per call applies!) and cheap mobile calls (usining 18158). Free calls at weekends are are available using Primus. With BT you also get free caller display (if you make one chargeable call per quarter using BT)

I don't know if you can get any of these with Talk Talk

Can only speak as i find, but I've been with TalkTalk for three weeks, and I haven't had one problem.

The landline service is good - and cheap.

Saving me a packet so far compared to BT.

Their basic line rental is the same as BT but their 'add-ons' (like Caller Display) are more expensive - so there's no point in changing.

From a calls point of view, there are numerous ways to make savings on what BT charge - see HERE for a few of my personal recommendations (it's the same link as recommended above by dawson but, in case you missed it).

TalkTalk is £11 line rental, then you need to add caller display cost.

BT line rental is £11 with free caller display.

TalkTalk now they force you onto their line rental should be avoided.

As pointed out by Heinz, the best solution is that posted on MSE.

Don't touch them with a barge pole. We switched from BT to Talk Talk and switched back after 2 months of screwed up bills and no customer service. They're a pile of cack IMHO.

The current poll on MSE shows more than two thrids of customers who have voted describe Talk Talk's service as 'Very Poor'

Avoid at ALL costs using TalkTalk for anything. I have no doubt you will live to regret it. They may be "cheap(er)" but so is their customer service if that is what you can call it. DON'T GO THERE!!!

The problem is in many cases they are dearer, some cases only pennies cheaper.

There are several other providers out there, many that really are cheaper.

Sticking with BT for now

AOL or Sky Talk looks the best option

Have been using talktalk since may, not had a problem with the broadband or the telephone service, my bt phone bill on average was £110 over the billing period, my latest talktalk bill was £24 which if times over the bt billing period works out rather well. Though to be honest, I am not a high phone user and dont have any extras on the phone like c/d, voicemail etc or their internet security stuff as you can get all that free off the net at the moment, avast, zone alarm etc , and just use the net to surf and buy online, dont download anything. Very happy with the service so far. However every company has its good and bad points, so lots of research is the key, and taylor a package that suits your lifestyle. And if I have any problems I will get some addresses and send some nicely worded letters, its amazing what results you get from letters sent recorded/special delivery to the chairman/managers. I used to work in mobile phone call centre, all they do is type a few notes on your accounts and go home for their tea.

That's exactly what I have done with respect to TalkTalk. I've sent Charles Dunston (CEO) a letter detailing how useless his customer service is and as a result where he can stick his TalkTalk telephone service. Again to anyone thinking of using TT for any service....DON'T

Then theres expensive calls to 0845 numbers. 4.5p a minute peak.
