I agree, try burning your music into WAV format or a lossless format, you will notice a big difference.

Burning crappy quality files to CD won't make any difference. Remember the old phrase, you can't polish a turd? It especially rings true here - no amount of converting, burning and mangling your compressed audio will make it sound better. Changing your speakers won't help, and neither will the cable.

Start off with getting good quality audio - rip them fresh from CDs and place them onto your iPod as Apple Lossless or wav's - not as MP3s or AACs. Avoid the iTunes music store, since they sell crap quality audio.
