I really want a DVD player. I don not want a really expensive one, just one that will play movies cleanly and impressively.
Will a Playstation 2 do this? Or shall I buy a DVD player?
What are the pitfalls with the PS2? Can you get them chipped to play Region 1? etc etc.
Could someone just say exactly what the pros and cons are please???

It can't (yet) be chipped/hacked for other regions.

You're also restricted to S-Video as a high quality output option (not a bad thing) due to RGB output being restricted for DVD playback.

you should get a seperate DVD player as PS2 DVD is limited to S-video output and although S-viseo isnt bad the colour depth on s-video is not as good as RGB and most DVD players (even the more basic ones) include RGB output) for less than the £300 that playstation 2 costs
Also PS2 has no decent games available at the moment

My advice is to get a seperate DVD player and a Dreamcast then you can have the best of both worlds as the dreamcast makes a great games machine with great games like crazy taxi, metropolis street racer soul calibur, resident evil code veronica
Also some shops do a deal where you can get a dreamcast and seperate DVD player for less than £300

Firstly don't buy a Dreamcast, I work in a games shop, and trust me it's dead. Sega have not made a profit for 4 years now and they will never make another console, turning to software only. Soon enough support will die.

I would also avoid the PS2 as in certain configurations (can't remember what) it turns the DVD picture green. Also it is not a sony dvd player but a wharfedale. yup believe it. Also £300 is only worth it if you like games. If you do then wait for an X-Box (better spec and cheaper) or an http://www.indrema.com/servlet/site, although the latter is a bit more risky in terms of how popular it will be.

I suggest getting a nice £200 pllayer from http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/index.html if you just like films.

hope this helps, Myth

dreamcast is not dead the games are amazing and people are buying them the dreamcast definatly has at least a few good years left!
There are currently over 100 games avaiable for the dreamcast and hundreds more planned

Anyway i agree with your other points that the dreamcast is useless to "mr_shoreditch" if he have no interest in games, though when i saw he was considering a PS2 i thought he at least had some interest in gaming

I also agree that the X-box looks great but to wait for this you would have to be very patient as it is will not appear over here until early 2002

the green cast over the picture is displayed when a dvd film is viewed through the rgb output which is only intended for games , switching the output to s video will cure this , if the guy wants a gaming machine mostly then there`s nothing wrong with the ps2 , as long as he can put up with the inferior playback quality of dvd films , well i say inferior , its still better than vhs and sky digital and you knowthat you`re spoilt when you can say that .

Surely shome mishtsake????

I can't believe Sony would use a Wharfedale DVD... especially as I don't think Wharfedale make their DVD units, they buy them and badge them I thought. I guess that the actual mechanism might be the same though...

Yeah I've been told by a number of different people that they just use cheap dvds. Not that that's bad I have a wharfedale and it's fine. I'm not sure why they did it, money i guess.

Rael if you read this you can confirm can't you!!

Yeah, Sony had so many problems with the 1st Jap models (which did contain a Sony DVD player) overheating, blowing up, melting and just simply breaking, that for all subsequent waves including all the foreign market machines they just bought a load of budget parts (I heard it was LG not wharfedale, but whatever...) so if you buy a PS2 then you are not even getting a Sony Dvd player for your £300!!

You can still get the Dreamcast plus DVD player (Encore or LG) for £300 plus 5 games if you look hard enough but they aren't sending out many DVD players to the shops anymore. So hurry if you wanna do that. However, Sega are punks and I don't like them so I wouldn't want anyone to buy a Dreamcast!! Also, the games they are promising they are constantly putting back and they are all just conversions of PC titles, no bad thing but the PC versions are always better. One rumour I heard was they are trying to bring out a peice of software to enable online gaming between DC and PC, which would be great if you haven't got a PC.

Cheers

I guess that you cant really expect a quality DVD palyer and a PS2 for £300!... after all, in six months they will slash the price to £150 I expect to drive sales, then they sit back and take all that lovely cash paid to them for sales of software.... clever sods...hehehe

if you're buying a PS2 at £299 just for DVD playback you might aswell get the Sony DVP-S335 which is the same price, if not cheaper, and will give significantly better results.

yeah, but with the rate of supply they're slowly dripping out the demand far exceeds the supply, this will let them keep the price artificially high, a factor prompting a lot of people to buy Dreamcasts over PS2 by the bucketload - I work in a computer game shop. I think it's terrible, I wouldn't buy either, for me gaming acheived it's highest limits at the SNES!!

That's nice and all but you're getting off topic. Thread closed.
