I would recommend looking at the PDA's on the Dell website. They look good, they connect to wireless networks (to go on the net) and are very good value for money without any compromise to the specifications.

They do support expansion in the form of memory cards to add more space. I don't know about other forms of expansion. For ones that make mobile calls, you need a "Phone Edition" PDA, but the only one of those I've seen in the UK is the O2 XDA (if they still sell that).

HTC are the biggest manufacturer of smart phones and phone enabled PDAs although they've only just (as in today!) released their first self branded models. They normally go under different brand names suh as O2's XDA, T-Mobile's SDA or i-mate. They also manufacture some devices for HP and Dell. To buy them alone would be fairly expensive (upwards of £300) but like all mobile phones, they are available heavily subsidised by Networks with a contract. O2, T-Mobile and Orange seem pretty good at rebranding HTC phones and bringing a selection of models to market. Vodafone so far have only released a couple of phones under their own brand.

The new HTC branded phones look very nice. I shall have to see what I can get when my contract is up next month.

I got the XDA mini S (i.e. the wizard) for free on o2 and absolutley love it so far, it's got word, excel, powerpoint on it, it synchs to your outlook, it's got wireless on it so you can surf for free at hot spots or use msn messenger.

I've just downloaded an MP3 player which seems pretty good - oh and it's a phone 'un all

I've got 2gb mini sd card in it with loads of music and films on - both look and sound good on it

Add to that, that it can be used as a GPS system, with a bluetooth reviever and tom tom. Not to mention all other pocketpc compatible software, and you're looking at a rather flexible device.

However, for those who are comfortable with such things, I would recommend getting rid of the o2 firmware, and replacing it with the qtek one. It runs faster, and is much more stable.

Ive got a HP iPaq H6365.

Its got wifi, infared, bluetooth, a camara and its a phone with a sim card reader all builtin. It has windows media player, microsoft word, excel and all the standard PDA programs/features.

It is abit of a brick with all those features builtin, but it has survived being used by me: which is a great achievement for any technological device.

I recommend it, or atleast you look at it before buying the 02. There is another model (the H6340), which is the same but easyer to get hold of which doesnt have a camara though.

I bought mine second hand on ebay for £150. There around £300 new, cheapest ive seen is £280 going upto £480 at some places.

One question regarding the XDA Mini. For the GPS does it have to be plugged into the car thru the lighter etc or can it be done from battery power of the phone/PDA?
