reading itunes library?
gravity

Hi,

A friend of mine has sent me an xml file of their itunes libary which I would like to view so that we can compare collections? I can open the xml file in notepad but it isn't in a very readable format.

Is there a webpage or small app that I can use to see what music my friend has in his collection from this xml file? (I don't have itunes on my computer and don't want to install it as i have a rio mp3 player not an ipod).

thanks

I've just tried opening the .xml file of my iTunes library and as far as I can see it's not possible to convert it into a readable format without lots of work. The logical, if lo-tech solution, would be for your friend to print it out and give it to you on paper. iTunes has print options (eg so you can make CD case inserts) and you can choose to print the whole library as a text document. On a Mac you can easily print-to-PDF and e-mail the document as a PDF file but I don't know if that's an option on your friend's computer.

Why not just install itunes then uninstall it? Or get your friend to send you a directory listing of their iTunes library (assuming they've consolidated their tracks)?

To create a list viewable in Excel, select everything in your library then copy (ctrl+c). Paste this into Excel and you have a readable, editable format.

Brilliant, I've just tried it and it works! The friend would have to do this and save it, then e-mail the Excel document to "gravity" who would then have to open it in Excel. But it's certainly an easy way to send someone your library list.
