Need help fast!
Sorry for the dramatic subject, but I need to find out quickly how to find the MAC address of my Network card.
I just installed it ready for when telewest get here tomorrow and I've been trying to find out how to change the MAC address. I want to change it to the same one as my router so that I don't have to register two different address. Problem is I can't even find anywhere that lists the current one. I'm using XP. I've tried running ipconfig /all but the window comes up so quickly and closes again in a split second! I did find a site that had some info with regards to finding the MAC address, however one of the first things it said was to make sure you've connected the ethernet cable between the PC and modem and that the modem is powered up. Does that mean I can't find out the MAC address until I have a modem connected to it?

When you typed 'ipconfig /all' did you enter it the Run box? If so, open a command prompt (or Run 'cmd') and enter 'ipconfig /all' in the command prompt window.
You should then be able to scroll to the mac address. |

If your network card supports it, you should be able to change it like this:
Right-click the the connection (that uses the network card) and press Properties->Configure, select the Advanced tab. Select Locally Administered Address and enter the new mac address. I've never done this so I don't know what other impact it might have. |

Mostly all of the time on routers you can 'clone' the MAC address of the main adapter though. Have you looked into being able to do this at all?

Then someone suggested that its best not to clone the NIC card, because if you sold it later they wouldn't be able to use it if you were using the same MAC address. Then someone suggested changing the NIC MAC address to the same one as the default address on the router (so cloning the MAC, but the other way around). That way when Telewest come and set it all up and register the MAC address of my NIC, it will in fact also be the same address and my router, eliminating the need to also register the router MAC address separately. I'd also then be able to swap between the router and connecting the cable modem directly to my PC (via the NIC) without have to reset the modem to recognise the different MAC address. Anyway, I connected up my router this morning (no internet connection yet) and I've configured the router and now both the router and NIC have the same MAC address. Fingers crossed it will also go well once Telewest get here this afternoon. Mostly all of the time on routers you can 'clone' the MAC address of the main adapter though.
