My HIFI blew up. Since I bought it (many years ago) I have aquired a DVD player, widescreen TV and Sky digital (panasonic box).

I want to replace it with either a new hi-fi or a dolby digital & DTS compatable decoder amp and surround speakers/sub. Which route should I take and why?

Assuming I went the Hi-Fi route, my choice so far is the Kenwood NV-701 (see below). I can connect my DVD player to it's optical input no problem and that would be it's main use. But sky digital broadcast surround sound signals (does normal TV or is that just NICAM?), would I be able to get that connected to the hi-fi unit? There are only phono outputs on my video, sky digibox and TV.

Thanks in advance.

Note: I am on a very tight budget (500 quid max)and just want something to get me going for a year or two.

===============================
Kenwood NV-701

Output Power 6 x 50W in Surround operation 50W /ch RMS (10%THD 1kHz 6 Ohm) * Terminals - Video: 2 Video input / 1Video output / 1 Monitor out - Audio: 1 Analog input / output / 6ch input (Common use with Video 2 input) 2 digital input (Video1 -> coaxial Video2 -> optical)

I would DEFINITLEY invest in separates. Get yourself a dedicated Dolby Digital/DTS Amp (not sure if the Kenwood you mentioned has DTS). Also consider Sony, Yamaha and Pioneer.

You should have no problem in connecting up your Sky/TV/Video via the phono sockets to enjoy Dolby Pro-Logic Surround sound.

Incidentally, if a film/TV prog was made in Dolby Surround then you can guarantee it will be broadcast that way on ANY UK system (Digital, Analogue, terrestrial, cable or satellite).

There are NO plans from ANY of the UK Digital companies to broadcast in DD5.1 or DTS, and probably never will be. Unlike other countries...US, Australia, Germany (i think) etc who all enjoy DD5.1 broadcasts.

Typical of the UK, 'we' have opted for quantity of channels rather than quality!!!

so very true kevo, still at least we have better pictures than America I guess.. and their HDTV is not really happening. Anyhow, I'd also recommend the TEchnics SA940 receiver amp. It has optical digital inputs as well as 5.1 analogue inputs. So it deals with Dolby Digital very well. Good output power 100w on all speakers (rms figure) and has FM/AM tuner. available in black or silver. I will likely get one of these myself. You'll only get Dolby prologic from Nicam TV, Sky or VHS hifi. Dolby Digital AC3 only via DVD player sadly.

Check out Richer Sounds for resonable,cheap separates.
Separates are definatly the best way to go and of course you can add to and/or improve as your budget allows.

Be cautious about the technics (i've got it!!) if i were to buy again i would've purchased the sony 930 (at the time, but now 940) I find that the treble (sharpness) of sound isn't too great on the technics andi have to set it pretty low to get decent sound. Saying that, the technics is very economical and is pretty good!!
