My Vodafone contract expires on Sept 13 and have given more than the 30 days required notice to end on that date. I have also asked for a PAC.

They are now saying they have issued the PAC valid for 30 days which must be used by 4 Sep and when I use it, it will cancel my contract on the day of Porting and therefore my Contract will end on that date. So by default it will be an early termination and they will charge a fee as well as my rental to the end date which I will have paid anyway.

Of course, I have complained but...

It would seem the only way to end a contract on the end of contract date is to delay it a couple of weeks and ask for a PAC about 2 weeks before and use it after the original contract end date.

I have been with Vodafone over 10 years!

Hope that makes sense!!

Cheers & beware

Early termination fee should simply be your line rental from the 4th to the 13th September and no more. (As this is the contract end date). No other charges should apply.

Thats how it works on o2.

Depending on your contract, it may also include a small % off the figure mentioned by Garyo2. Think it was about 3% last time I was with Vodafone.

Of course, the other thing to do is to wait till exactly 30 days before theend of the contract and ten give notice and ask for a PAC. Then you can arrange it so that any new contract you take out starts on the day your contract ends.

I've done that most times I've wanted to change suppliers with no probs whatsoever.

Thanks guys, the problem seems to be you can not guarantee the Port date. I have asked Vodafone to make sure my PAC does NOT expire before my contract. But it seems I still risk a day or two to make sure the PAC does not expire.

In one mail they tell me my cancellaton fee will be any unpaid rental on my contract (fair enough) but in another they quote £48. Given my rental is £25 can't see where they get it from!

Cheers

AFAIK, your statutory notice period is 30 days, and even if you say a couple of weeks before thatdate is due to roll round that you want to cancel your contract, they will still apply the 30-day period. For example, they will calculate your end date as 30 days from the date you contact them to cancel your contract.

Therefore, you will be penalised by having to pay any additional service charges that you would have incurred in the couple of weeks between the date they calculate and the date your contract was officially due to end. I don't know for sure, but you may also have to pay a penalty for early cancellation.

I think you need to get in touch with Voda, expalin that you've had 2 different responses and ask them to clafify for certain what you will be expected to pay. Get it in writing so that they can't try and vary the charges when they take your last payment. or it could take ages to sort it out.

Thanks Muffin, the point is I have given more than the 30 days required. I have specified the date as the actual contract end date. But in order to use the PAC, by default, it will end before the contract date.

It would seem the only clean way to do it is give notice to end, say a week after your contract end date and apply for the PAC a week after you have given the notice. Then use the PAC at the end of the contract. In fact once you are out of contract use of the PAC itself serves as the contract end date. Obviously you will have to then pay 30 days worth of rental.

So much to trying to play by the rules it would appear you cant

The problem here lies with the rules of porting, as defined by OFCOM!!!

they basically state that a port out request DOES NOT act as a disconnection request until the PAC number is used!!!

so, if you don't port out, they'll keep on charging you.

The only way to do it is to use the PAC number before the contract ends and bite the bullet with the line rental charges!!

Thanks. I don't mind the rental, it's that they say there will be an additional cancellation charge and quoted £48!!

Cheers

ask what the charge is for and where it states in their t's and c's that they can charge it.

post back with what they say - I'm guessing it'll be to do with paragraph 8 c, which to me sounds like a fudged term!!

I think it's supposed to say you'll have to pay to the end of the contract term if you disconnect inside contract, and pay a months line rental if its outside contract.

If they say its a charge for porting your number, you may want to point out that this is against the rules laid out in the Porting Process Manual. Closely followed by
"How'd you like them apples, eh?"

seriously tho, get back with what they say abou the 48 squid.

I have recently cancelled four contracts with Orange / 3 by requesting a PAC.

Providing you request it during the 11 month all you will pay is 30 days worth of line rental, ie the notice period. This is because with the notice period, you have honoured your minimum (12month) term.

If you ask for a PAC BEFORE month 11 they will charge you extra fees as this is classed as an early termination.

This was the case for Orange and 3 and see no reason why Vodafone would be different.

Vodafone have just increased their fees by unbundling picture messages.

by term 8a of their T&Cs you can cancel.

However, they appear to nullify this by saying they need to give you 14 days writen notice of fee increases (para 7a):

Variation of Charges and Terms

a) We reserve the right to increase/decrease our charges from time to time and/or introduce new charges from time to time. If we increase/decrease our charges, we will give you at least 14 days' prior notice.

b) We reserve the right to make changes to these terms from time to time and to introduce new terms from time to time if there are changes to the law, or amendments to Vodafone's/02 terms and conditions (as applicable) due to changes to the licence under which Vodafone/02 (as applicable) operates its telecommunications network. We will notify you of any changes to these terms or new terms introduced.
