iPod

Pro's - Intuitive , simple to use , very slim , good battery for music , Very good customer service via apples support website and online forms

Cons - 2hour VIDEO battery

Creative Zen Vision M

Pro's - longer VIDEO battery life , plays alot more video files types without needing to convert (although free conversion software is of course available)

Cons - Bulky , not as intuitive .

Obviously the con's of one, is the pro of the other. Look about various internet reviews, however i would chose iPod. My friend got a creative Zen Vision M, and playing about with it actually made me buy the iPod video (go figure)

What do you primarily want it for?

Is it mainly music, with video being a nice, but not essential, add on?

Or ... do you want it to be as fully functional for video as possible?

If video is really important, of those two, I'd go for the Zen.

If video is really important, and you want to spend a bit more, have a look at the Cowon A2, or, if you fancy taking a chance on a new unit thats still a bit buggy, but good value, the iubi blue.

The Archos is also not bad, but weighing it up against the A2 a while back, I bought the A2.

If it's mainly a music player you're after then flip a coin ...

I agree with this and in addition if customer service as well as quality is important to you I would go with the A2(Cowon Systems) over both the Ipod and the Zen.

I'd go for the iPod personally, and did, a couple of weeks ago, it's lovely.

Would that be all those Apple customers in the USA who launched a group action against Apple over the iPod and won a few years back

Podcasts are normal MP3s that can be loaded with to any MP3 player, not just an Ipod.

I have the Zen Vision M and find it really intuative (however I did graduate from a Zen Touch), and coupled with Winamp it's pure quality. (I like to manually choose what goes on the MP3 player so if you want to plug in and sync podcasts it might not be as simple).

I have just ditched my 60Gb 4th gen iPod for the ZVM and I am rather impressed. I kept my iPod but will sell this in a few days as I am over my love affair with Apple; reasonablish products but well too expensive.

I do however wish that music player makers would scrap the touch controls and go with simple (but apparently "uncool") buttons - it would make controlling the device easier and less prone to error.

I am used to the ZVM now and use the touch controls like a button, but do have to be careful as I do sometimes select when I want to go up. Saying that, it isn't a sole Creative fault; the Apple touch controls are hardly robust.

After a few days, I can say that the ZVM sounds great (subjectively of course). I found my 4th gen iPod distorted at high volumes (the 3rd gen didn't). The ZVM is consistently good throughout. FM reception is fair, and the short amounts of video that I watch are excellent.

Worth it if you are brave enough to think outside the Apple box...

If you want a portable video player rather than an mp3 player to watch videos, why not just by an MP4 player? Longer battery, and made especially for playing videos.

Archos AV500 for the video. Music videos, films and tv programs. Ipod nano for the music.

I like archos, have a gmini myself. I've seen people with ipod, it's not that great, the scroll wheel was good but the screen was too slow meaning you couldn't really benefit from scroll wheel.

Zen Vision M is also good. I think the answer is not in the differences between the two players' hardware but in the software and whether you want iTunes or you want the freedom and choice of not itunes.

I've got the Zen Vision M's big brother and I have to say it is a fabulous piece of equipment. Yes, it's big with its 3.7 inch screen but since I only use it on the train or in the car that suits me fine. Wonderful screen quality, it's own built in speaker and great interface. Overall I would always suggest Creative over Apple - better value for money and less hassle as they play near all media types.

It doesn't have one. I'm not sure which model he was talking about.

Reasons to go for the ZV:M over the 30gb Video iPod.

[1] Better Sound Quality (slightly) - Most magazine reviews put the quality as a bit better than the Apple.
[2] Batteries - Apples have a bad history with their batteries, no one has yet found fault with a ZV:M.
[3] Plays more audio formats
[4] Plays more video formats (DIVX, etc)
[5] Better Screen
[6] You can copy your files OFF again

Reasons to go with the iPOD over the ZV:M
[1] Size - Much, much thinner
[2] Looks - Much, much sexier
[3] Cool click wheel thingie
[4] Links with iTunes
[5] err....
[6] That's it!

I have 3 MP3 players, my old MUVO2 (4 gigs, tiny in size -- Now used exclusively as a portable HDD), an old 3rd gen 40gb iPod (used as my home Hi-FI) and my ZV:M, which I take with me everywhere.

Truthfully, I wish my ZV:M were a bit thinner. I hope Creative do something about that with the rumoured ZV:M 60 gig model, if so I'll be upgrading straight away.
