Hi. I know nothing about them, and I just wanted some advice on which is the best sort to get within a low budget!
Also, can you/how do you get the pictures onto your pc/laptop then? is it simple? Thanks.

Make sure the camera has an optical zoom. Digital zoom means jack sh*t - it just blows up a part of the already compressed picture.

As for getting the pictures on your PC, it's a simple case of connecting the camera to the computer, going into the removable drive that appears in my computer and cutting and pasting the files across to where you want to store the pictures. For Sony cameras (and their proprietary crap ) you've got to install a driver first for it to work.

Also, try and get a good brand if you can afford it, such as Fuji, Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Sony etc.

Can anyone tell me the basic premise of them, as in- can you delete pics if you dont like them and so on?

The reviews sound good, and Kodak is near the top of camera manufacturers. I had a DX7440 prior to upgrading to my current Fuji (wanted a bigger optical zoom).

4 mega pixels is more than adequate for your normal phot prints (6x4, 7x5,8x6) - realistically you'll be ok printing upto A4 size.

Just like any digital camera you will be able to view the photo's you have taken instantly on the LCD screen. If you aint happy with that photo then just delete it and take another one. Just like a camera on a mobile phone etc.

This camera takes SD memory cards - which are available online at pretty good prices. One bit of advice though - cheap/unbranded memory cards are ok for taking photos in the park, daytrips etc but if you want to be double sure that you won't lose your photos I'd recommend spending a little extra - others may disagree with me but thats just my humble opinion.

The main thing I recommend is reading the manual before attempting to use any camera - everything you need to know is in that little book.

The thing I just don't get is how you get the pictures from the camera onto your laptop? Sorry if I appear stupid!

No need to apologise, it's not stupid to research something you don't know about before buying one.

Basically the camera will come with a USB cable (like a printer cable etc). All you have to do is plug one end into the camera and the other into your laptop.

Your laptop will then recognise the memory card inside the camera and make it a drive on your laptop (If you go into My Computer your hard drive will probably be Drive C, CD ROM Drive D etc - basically your camera will become Drive E or whatever the first letter available is).

Then you would double click that drive - it will probably have a few folders but if you go through them you will eventually come to the folder that contains your photos.

Then all you have to do is copy or cut them, and paste them into a folder on your harddrive.

Thats the way I get my photos, however most cameras come with software that will deal with getting photos from your camera to your harddrive.

For me, it's: -

1. Plug camera into USB port.

2. Switch camera on, wait a few seconds for Windows to recognise it.

3. Go to "My Computer", go to the 'g' drive (which is what it appears as on my computer). Click through a few folders.

4. All of the pictures are there as JPEG image files. I usually cut the files and paste them into a folder on my hard disk.

5. Disconnect camera, and you can start shooting again.
