I thought it was the norm that the "senior" commentator went second...? Ingham is on first with Brotherton on second in the Carling Cup semi. I've not known that happen before - i could be wrong!

I wondered if Talk might be tempted to bring someone new in to do their new Saturday 3pm commentaries. It'll surely be something of a flagship programme now so would they not want a bigger "name" to commentate?

That's a very good point. There is a substantial talent pool in BBC and ILR Local Radio. I would love to hear Tom Ross (BRMB in Birmingham), Phil Parry (ex-Capital Gold London and now BBC London) and John Bradley (ex-Radio Aire, Leeds,commentator) to name but three on a national stage. Where is JB now? Where is Dave Roberts (who used to cover North-East Football on, I think, CenturyFM) now?

I don't think he was thinking of those sorts of names. I know of them but I doubt they're "big" names. I've only heard Tom Ross and I'm not sure whether he's national radio standard. He's good for the format of local radio but I'm not sure whether national radio will be good for him.

I said in another thread that Peter Martin currently at Radio Clyde may be an outside bet for Talksport's commentary team

Correct - Tom Ross enjoys legendary status in the West Midlands but his commentaries are absolutely dire IMHO. Phil Parry on the other hand is a decent local radio commentator and far less parochial, but again I would say not good enough for a national platform. The guys currently at Talk would do a better job than either of those.

I was thinking more of someone with a bit of pedigree at this level. That's easier said than done of course. A good candidate might have been Ron Jones, who IMO still deserves a wider audience, but I fear he's probably past his sell-by date.

Beaky (radio city commentator for many a year) with Alan Brazil summerising might be an option, although i think Al likes to be at the gee gees on a Saturday. A guy called Roger Johnson would be good too, i remember him from GMR and he was excellent IMO

Haven't seen Walsall_Chris on here lately but he may be interested to know that Beacon announced earlier this week that they'll be providing reports from Walsall games starting this weekend.

I have seen Roger Johnson's name on BBC Score Interactive covering games in the South of England.

One commentator i rate is Ken McRobb. He used to be Real Radio Scotland's commentator and now is on Setanta's books (or, at least, he covers SPL and, I think, commentated on Ajax v Feijnoord last weekend).

Ian Danter and Gary Stevens are the commentary team for talkSPORT's Champions League coverage on Wednesday 6th March. Jim Proudfoot is presenting with Nigel Pearson and Alvin Martin doing the Tuesday commentary.
