I was a big fan of listening to radio coverage in London. In theearly 90's you had coverage from both LBC and Capital which was far superior to the BBC. Jonathon Pearce and Steve Wilson (both from Capital have both move onto Match of the Day). I know Market Forces forced Capital Gold London to pull out of Providing live commentries, I feel theyshould have made more of an effort to keep this service going especially as when LBC pulled out they cornered the market. There is no real alternative for commentary now in London. It's basically BBC Local or BBC National.

LBC had the excellent Tony Lockwood covering their games. A pure football enthusiast who had a much more considered approach to commentating than say Jonathon Pearce did. Surprised he hasn't gone onto to BBC or Sky to commentate. I remember he went onto help Talk Radio (now Talksport) launch their football coverage in 1997 with le Tournoi and then commentate on World Cup '98 in France along with Alan Parry and Andy Gray. Does anyone know what he's doing these days? Is he on a local station in another part of the country?

Tony Lockwood can often be heard on BBC's Final Score programme reporting from matches.

He is also a regular voice on Sky Sports News voicing packages.

On another thread it was reported he commentated on a Manchester United game on Century earlier this season, but he doesn't seem to have had a regular commentary gig for many years.

I am listening to the Derby game on 5Live, John Murray has developed into such a good commentator, he is actually the best one on 5Live right now

I thought everybody had abandoned this thread. Good to hear from you, bwfcol.

Just to fill in the details for other interested parties, Ian Dennis (a good signing from BBC Radio Leeds), John Murray (who I agree is excellent) and Dion Dublin commentating on Five Live. I assume Tony Husband leads the commentary team on BBC Radio Solent and Ross Fletcher is the equivalent on BBC Radio Derby. Both these commentators have reported or even commentated on Five Live and (in RF's case) on Five Live Sports Extra.

The fact that John Murray has more or less taken over the Saturday three o'clock slot on Five Live is testament to his quality, in my opinion.

I shall report on the Cup Final on Saturday with regard to national and local commentaries and then . . Roll on August (although I will switch to cricket for the summer months, starting with a visit to Lord's on Thursday).

I hazard a shocking guess that it will be Ingham/Green for 5Live on Saturday/Weds
With Murray/Brown (Who is getting very few high profile games now) doing some of the games during the Bank Holiday weekend with Dennis/McNamara etc
5Live's teams tonight have been hampered by some eejit near them with some sort of clacker!

I don't really have many dislikes in the BBC Radio commentary squad but I do rate John Murray, Darren Fletcher and Conor Macnamara (as well as Mike Ingham and, despite myself, Alan Green). It will be interesting to hear how Talk Sport rise to the challenge next season.

Talksport have 2nd choice of the 3pm Saturday KO's in the Premier League iirc, are any other contracts changing?

The Smooth Chelsea commentary was moved to new DAB radio station Real Radio, which included today's FA Cup coverage.

Ah, that caught me out. Thanks for the info. Was Gary Taphouse the commentator?

Correction -> I now know he was the commentator. It sounds like Kerry Dixon as summariser.

Not too sure if Kerry was there today, but I've heard him on previous matches on Real.

So Smooth covered all the Chelsea FA Cup matches through the season, but when they get to the final they stuck the commentary on a DAB station no-one listens to?

Did anyone catch Capital FM's stuff? Some cracking radio up to kick off.. just a shame it didn't lead up to a commentary!

They dumped Chelsea commentary when Smooth rebranded as a easy listening station.

As GMG own the rights to Chelsea commentary in London, they used their digital station Real, which was called Century Digital on the CE London DAB mulitiplex to put the remaning Premiership, champions league and FA Cup matches on instead.

I hate to admit it, but I've never listened to a local radio sports commentary (even though our HR station does live commentary of non league Nuneaton Borough and Coventry City home games).

If I want to listen to sports commentary on the radio then it's Five Live every time for me!

I came across this site this morning, which is attempting to record as many football phone-ins as possible, Dunno about the legal side of it, but its quite good for my ipod in the car.
