That could be the case Ian - it certainly sounds as if it could be a typo. Incidentally, I remember Steve Mackie from doing talkSPORT's 'Eurolink' Euro 2004 Updates a few summers ago - which he did alongside Ian Beech (Today FM) and Mark Crossley (not the keeper!) Can't remember the voice though, so I couldn't pinpoint whether it was him or not on Saturday.

Great knowledge Ian - very, very interesting and informative post (and not just the bit I quote!)

Out of interest, is Tony Trethewy the BRMB reporter that Jasper Carrott references in his famous Tony Butler anecdote (the one that is often included in BBC TV tributes and compilations of classic clips from his stand-up career)?

One of my favourite comedy sketches - I'd love it if someone could quote it fully on here!

You'd never believe the bland, comfy old George Gavin on Sky nowadays was the same one.
What a great listen that show used to be.
I actually really like George Gavin in his current role on Sky Sports now. He is a consumate proffesional, very warm with a good sense of humour. He's a very good choice as the lead anchorman on Sky Sports' Football League coverage.

Although, whilst I'm not old enough to remember him on there, I'm told by various people that he was even better on BRMB with the legend that is Tom Ross.

If anyone's interested, that season that IanFergus quotes the commentators from (1982/83?) would have been one of Tom Ross' first seasons with BRMB - presumabley as a reporter rather than a commentator. By the late '80's, he was the networks Sports Editor - and he's never looked back. A true legend in West Midlands broadcasting.

Apologies - no doubt your right Rocket Romano, as I didn't actually hear any of Century 100-102FM's Newcastle United commentary (as they stream the Boro games live online instead).

I did, however, hear Phil Blacker's full-time reporter - and then Alistair Brownlee mentioned Malcolm MacDonald's involvement on the 'Three Legends' phone-in - so I (wrongly) presumed it was him. Thanks for clearing things up though.

Going back to an old question, anyone know who BRMB's co-commentator on the Arsenal-Villa game on Saturday was?

Admittedly, I didn't hear RTE Radio yesterday and it is a wee bit early in the season to detect a pattern.
Another interesting post Ian - thanks for the details.

I'm interested in what you say on RTE Radio - I often check out a bit of the build-up/post match reaction on their Irish rival Today FM online on a Saturday, but rarely check out RTE - whenever I tend to tune in 252LW on Saturday afternoons they always seem to be covering horse racing or something! What's the story with their Premiership coverage - I take it they have reporting acreditation, but what's the story when it comes to live rights? Did they used to have them, only to lose them to Today FM in recent years?

My memory is that Dom joined Century pretty much to replace him... as soon as Capital bought Century which I reckon was not long into the 99-00 season. He was barely there for a year before following his boss Paul Jackson to Virgin.

Prior to that he'd been at BRMB until the summer of 1997 before moving to Capital Gold in London when Proudfoot replaced Ian Crocker in Birmingham at BRMB.
Interesting stuff lads (both to Shaun and nwallop) - Dom joining Century 105.4FM to replace Jim Proudfoot would make sense, as almost immedietly after JP covered Manchester United's Treble, he headed off to commentate for Sky Sports and talkSPORT as well.

However, could it have been the case that Dominic Johnson worked primarily as a presenter, with Mark Regan (now BBC Radio WM's Sports Editor) being their top match commentator that season? It says in Rego's WM profile that he commentated on Manchester United in the World Club Cup in 1999-2000 and the Brazilian tournament as well they took part in rather than the FA Cup that season. Not that he last that much longer as a Century commentator than Proudfoot - by 2002-03, he was Tom Ross' deputy on Capital Gold Birmingham, with him becoming WM's Sports Editor the following seasons. Johnson/Regan's successors on Century would be Fraser Dainton (now Sky Sports News - anyone remember his famous commentary on Beckham's free-kick in the England-Greece game which is used on that Bell & Spurling record?) and current commentator Gary Weaver.

All this talk of Proudfoot and Regan has got me thinking - as clearly there is a lot of fans of BRMB/Xtra AM/Capital Gold Birmingham's football coverage - can we list the deputy commentators who have played second fiddle to Tom Ross over on 1152am in the West Midlands down the years?

Here's the one's I remember - feel free to fill-in the gaps and correct me where neccesary:

2006-07: Nathan Alleyne (brought in from The Villian this season)
2005-06: James Mountford (moved to BBC WM this season)
2004-05: James Mountford (well, reports only - this was the season when BRMB had no live rights)
2003-04: Ian Danter (now talkSPORT)
2002-03: Mark Regan (now BBC WM Sports Editor)
2001-02: Jack Woodward (now The Villian)
2000-01: Mark Bolton maybe (? - then left to Central TV, now at Sky Sports)
1999-2000: Mike Taylor (now BBC WM)
1998-99: Mike Taylor (?)
1997-98: Jim Proudfoot (left to Century, then joined Sky Sports/talkSPORT - now moving to Setanta Sports in September)
1996-97: Ian Crocker (now at Setanta, joined Sky Sports full-time in 1998, after having worked for them on a freelance basis alongside his radio work - so where did he go in the 97-98 season?)

And that's as far as I know - any advances/corrections?

I personally cannot stand Century North West's football coverage simply because they do not cover any teams outside of the 'big 4' in the region. BBC Manchester (BBC GMR) covers City and Bolton to a good level although the presenting/commentators could be better, I have listened to BBC Lancashire now and again but their commentaries are of a poor standard IMO.

It seems to me that, with some possible exceptions (e.g. Hallam FM), the ILR stations concentrate on the top flight whereas the BBC Local Radio stations cover the full spectrum of football from the Premiership down to at least the Conference.

From memory Dominic joined Century NW after Euro 2000 but before the season began. Mark Regan was the main commentator in the 99-00 season. When Dom joined he became the main commentator and Mark only really commentated on days when they were doing commentary on more than one match. For example Dom would do the United game and Mark would do the other (at that time Century also held non-exclusive rights for Man City (but commercial exclusive), Everton, Blackburn and Preston).

Ian Crocker certainly did some reports on Sky Sports Super Saturday from the Midlands grounds in 1997-98 (mainly Aston Villa and Coventry City)

Nice work Ian, thanks for the detail about Ian Crocker the other day plus all the details from today!

Here's a few more details for you from today's Football on the Radio:

talkSPORT: Nigel Pearson has replaced Adrian Durham (who now presents football on Setanta Sports TV at the weekends) on the station's flagship Saturday football show Football First, although he continues to be joined in the studio by Alvin Martin (who watched Fulham-Sheffield United on his monitor this afternoon) and Gary Stevens (who watched Spurs-Everton). A new addition to the show is Monday-Thursday drivetime host and former Soccer Saturday pundit Rodney Marsh, who is working as a roving reporter for the show, giving some punditary alongside one of the station's match reporters at a featured 3pm Premiership kick-off each weekend. This weekend, he was at Watford vs Manchester United.

Right, the full list of reporters:

Premiership:
Liverpool v West Ham - Chris Cooper
Charlton v Bolton - Ian Abrahams
Fulham v Sheffield United - Andrew McKenna
Tottenham v Everton - Mike Bovill
Watford v Manchester United - Andy Clarke with Rodney Marsh
Wigan v Reading - Eamonn Watson
Manchester City v Arsenal - Graham Beecroft (One of the station's Breakfast Show presenters, who seems to have returned to reporting after being taken off Monday's Sports Breakfast!)

Championship:
Cardiff v Birmingham - Grahame Lloyd
Colchester v Derby - John Norman
Crystal Palace v Burnley - Paul McDowell
Leicester v Southend - Geoff Peters
Southampton v Preston - Tony Incenzo
Wolves v Luton - Ian Danter

BBC Radio Five Live: Mark Saggers presented the show today, anchoring the programme from Twickenham before Dave Woods, David Oates and John Kear provided commentary on Rugby League's Challenge Cup Final. They had two commentary matches, the Premiership 12.45pm and the 5.15pm kick-offs. Also, they had bits of commentary from one of the 3pm kick-offs. No football on Five Live Sports Extra, that was devoted to the C&G Trophy Final.

Commentary teams:
Liverpool v West Ham - Conor McNamra, Mike Ingham & Kevin Gallacher
Watford v Manchester United - Darren Fletcher & Don Goodman
Manchester City v Arsenal - John Murray, Ian Brown & Eddie Gray (usually of BBC Radio Leeds).

Reporters:
Charlton v Bolton - Alistair Bruce-Ball
Fulham v Sheffield United - Jacqui Oatley
Tottenham v Everton - Arlo White
Wigan v Reading - Peter Slater

Cardiff v Birmingham - Juliet Ferrington
Crystal Palace v Burnley - Mike Sewell
Southampton v Preston - Chris Dennis
Wolves v Luton - Mark Clemmit
Huddesfield v Nottingham Forest - Stuart Hall
Celtic v Hibernian - Roddy Forsyth
Hearts v Inverness CT - Andy Gillies

Today FM: Michael McMullan presented the show as always, with Mark Lawrenson joining him over the phone for the first hour, with today's commentary game being Watford vs Manchester United.

Liverpool v West Ham - Stuart Linnell
Charlton v Bolton - Graham Miller
Fulham v Sheffield United - Nigel Bidmead
Tottenham v Everton - Ian Beech
Watford v Manchester United - Ron Jones & Lou Macari
Wigan v Reading - Tom Tyrrell
Manchester City v Arsenal - Jake Katborg

BBC Radio Wales: Oliver Hides presenting.

Regional commentaries:
Cardiff v Birmingham - Roger Hughes & Jason Perry
Leyton Orient v Swansea - Rob Phillips & Colin Addison
Wrexham v Barnet - John Hardy & Ian Walsh

Premiership reporters:
Tottenham v Everton - Iwan Roberts
Watford v Manchester United - Kevin Ratcliffe

BBC Radio WM: Daz Hale was filling in for the absent Paul Franks in hosting/co-commentating from 3pm, with Dan Wheeler fronting the early kick-off.

Cardiff v Birmingham City (early game) - James Mountford & Dan Wheeler
Wolves v Luton (3pm Kick-off) - Mark Regan & Daz Hale
Walsall v Darlington (reports & Saddlers World commentary) - Rob Gurney & Mick Kearns

Capital Gold/Century commentaries:

On BRMB, Tom Ross & Kevan Broadhurst commentated on the early game between Cardiff and Blues before going back to normal programmes after a phone-in (no Villa or Albion playing at 3pm).

Century 105.4FM had Gary Weaver & Mickey Thomas commentating on Watford vs Manchester United. They used the same reporters as IRN, with these exceptions - Alan Kennedy reporting on Liverpool v West Ham, Graham Sharp doing Tottenham v Everton and (I presume) Gary Owen doing Manchester City v Arsenal.

On Century 100-102FM - with no Middlesborough or Newcastle game, Alistiar Brownlee & (I think) Bernie Slaven presented an 'Around The Grounds' show using IRN reports.

I believe that it is.

Commentators today on BBC Radio Lancashire for Blackburn v Chelsea are Andy Bayes and Richard Dinnis.

Smooth FM cover Chelsea in London and I suspect the commentary team is, as usual, Gary Taphouse and Kerry Dixon. I shall try to confirm later.

Correction -> Summariser is Colin Lee,

I think it is too - here is a picture of him, along with other members of the Today FM Premiership Live coverage team from a few seasons ago, on a page that is still up on the site today (it was from the season just before Match Of The Day returned, when Tony Gubba, and not Ron Jones, was their regular Saturday matchday commentator).

Correction -> Summariser is Colin Lee,
Boo, hiss.

Nah, Colin Lee did a very good job at The Saddlers, even if he did leave us in poor circumstances (talking about 'commitment' one minute, swanning off to talk to Plymouth Argyle at a crucial point in our season the next ). Although I'll never forgive him for letting talented young youth prospects like Karl Hawley and Andy Bishop slip through our fingers without them ever getting a proper chance.

The Gary Taphouse on Smooth FM - he'll be the same one who popped up on Sky Sports Football First on Saturday doing Charlton-Fulham, and who appears on their Saturday evening extended highlights show doing games whenever Chelsea are not in action that day?

Right, other details from Sunday afternoon's football coverage.

BBC Radio Five Live: Eleanor Oldroyd was presenting the football action from 3pm after the F1 coverage finished.

Commentaries:
Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Darren Fletcher & Dion Dublin (second half only)
Blackburn Rovers v Chelsea - Ian Brown, Ian Dennis & Jimmy Armfield.

Reports:
Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United - Peter Slater
Brighton & Hove Albion v Crewe Alexandra - Jacqui Oatley
Kilmarnock v Rangers - Roddy Forsyth

talkSPORT: There reporters were:

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United - Tim White
Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Ian Danter
Blackburn Rovers v Chelsea - Chris Cooper

BBC Radio WM: Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Mark Regan (commentator) & Daz Hale (analyst & presenter)

Capital Gold Birmingham: Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Tom Ross (C&P) & Ian Taylor (A)

BBC Radio Scotland: Richard Gordon presented coverage of Kilmarnock vs Rangers from Rugby Park.

The commentator was BBC Scotland TV commentator Paul Mitchell (which was a little surprising as SPL Live Sunday matches tend to be done by main BBC Radio Scotland commentator David Begg), who was joined by 2 summerisers, Gordon Smith and Bobby Williamson.

BBC Scotland's Chief Football Correspondant Chick Young was on hand for pitchside reports, post match interviews and punditary during the final hour of the coverage. Incidentally, if you're interested in BBC Radio Scotland's football coverage, you can find details of their commentary/coverage teams for most matches from the Sportsound website which is found here.

Continuing the reporters. RTE on Sunday used Ian Danter at Villa Park and Pete Smith at Ewood Park.

Today's BBC Five Live commetators at Sunderland are Conor Macnamara and Ian Dennis with Craig Brown, whilst Tom Ross is commentating on BRMB with (I assume) 'Bomber' Brown. Talk Sport's reporter is John Temple. Jeff Owen is reporting on Beacon Radio.

Walsall_Chris,

A few additions to your list of Capital Gold Birmingham commentators of recent years.

You have my dates there correct, but Adam Bridge took over the main commentaries from me midway through the 99-00 season, before I left the station the following summer. He was Programme Controller at BRMB last time I saw him.

At about the same time as Jack Woodward joined the station, they also employed Rob O'Neill, I don't know how long he stayed for. He was working at one of the Yorkshire stations covering Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Among others used for commentary games during my time there were Ian Smith, Mark Tompkins (who is now on the new ILR station covering Reading among many others) and Mike Hollis.

Hope this adds to your list.

All the best and good luck to the Saddlers,

Mike Taylor

Living in Lancashire I totally disagree with you saying BBC Radio Lancashire's commentaries are of a poor standard. Their commentators are knowledgable and have a sense of humour when it's required. What makes you dislike them?

Is Grant Coleman reporting on Radio Lancashire the one who used to be on BRMB as a sports reporter during Butler's days and then later on WM (as recently as last year I think).
And I agree with the person above about the legendary partenrship of George Gavin and Tom Ross. Maybe some of the arguments were 'staged' but what fantastic radio between 6-7 pm on a Friday night it used to be.
Then there was the live sports forums which will also go down in BRMB folklore, usually presented from a pub or working-mens club! Local radio as it should be.
So is Nigel Pearosn actually presenting Football First on Saturday now or is he still reporting from one of the grounds?
I remembr working with him at Classic Gold Radio - a real nice bloke and for his hard work deserves all the success he has got.

I think Grant Coleman works or worked for BBC Radio Solent.

Nigel Pearson (as well as commentating on Speedway for Sky) has been compering Talk Sport's Saturday programme.

Yorkshire Radio on DAB is not available where I live, but I'm not too disappointed as Radio Leeds have excellent football coverage - including full commentary on every Leeds Utd league and cup match. Eddie Gray is the guest commentator for the vast majority of Leeds matches.

Thanks for all the details Mike, it's very interesting to see just how many commentators have worked on BRMB over the past few years and where they're at now.

All the best, and keep up the good work on BBC WM - I always enjoy your commentaries and reports.

And hopefully all our local teams will have good seasons (well, maybe not Wolves... ). Enjoy the new footbal season.

That's true, he's managing to fit the Speedway in with his presenting of the mighty Football First show over on talkSPORT (and he's doing a very good job as the new anchorman - filling some big shoes in Adrian Durham, who also did a sterling job, but he's more than rising to the challenge). Not that there's anything particularly new about this - he's been doing match reports from the West Midlands every Saturday for nearly 10 years for this show before he was promoted to the presenter's chair.

And I concure with what Newsbuff has said about him. I got the chance to interview him for a website a few years back, and in my dealings with him it was clear that he's a really nice bloke, who deserves all the many successes he's achieved.

Going back to Ian's other post from the other day which I missed...

That's interesting. One talkSPORT reporter and one IRL reporter used by RTE used on their Premiership coverage on Sunday. Looks like they may be using reporters from both networks, rather than just IRL like Capital Gold do or just talkSPORT as they did last season.

It was indeed Tony 'Bomber' Brown joining Tom Ross to provide commentary for BRMB on Bank Holiday Monday's Sunderland-West Brom game, and very good it was too. Mark Regan & Malcolm Boyden provided commentary on the same game for local rivals BBC Radio WM.

It's interesting to hear Jeff Owen cropping up as a WBA reporter on Beacon Radio, he used to do a lot of match reports from the West Midlands for talkSPORT's Football First show between 2002 and 2004, but seemed to dissapear at around the same time they brought in Ian Danter from Capital Gold Birmingham (whose gone on to achieve presenting success on that station). I had wondered where he's got to.

Just to make you're card, the commentary teams/reporters the two national stations used on the Monday night game between Boro and Portsmouth were: - John Murray, David Oates and Mark Lawrenson for Five Live, with the station's Coca-Cola League correspondant Mark Clemmit joining the commentary team in the stands, where he did his Coca-Cola League round-up at half time. Graham Courtney was the reporter on this one for talkSPORT.

I think with Ian Danter, jeff Owen and probably still Nigel Pearson, these guys are freelances whcih is why Ian Danter was able to work for TalkSport on Saturday and TRE on Sunday.
He's another great West Midlands' radio talent along with Pearson and great to see them both on a deseved national stage.
