That could be the case Ian - it certainly sounds as if it could be a typo. Incidentally, I remember Steve Mackie from doing talkSPORT's 'Eurolink' Euro 2004 Updates a few summers ago - which he did alongside Ian Beech (Today FM) and Mark Crossley (not the keeper!) Can't remember the voice though, so I couldn't pinpoint whether it was him or not on Saturday.

Great knowledge Ian - very, very interesting and informative post (and not just the bit I quote!)
Out of interest, is Tony Trethewy the BRMB reporter that Jasper Carrott references in his famous Tony Butler anecdote (the one that is often included in BBC TV tributes and compilations of classic clips from his stand-up career)?
One of my favourite comedy sketches - I'd love it if someone could quote it fully on here!

I actually really like George Gavin in his current role on Sky Sports now. He is a consumate proffesional, very warm with a good sense of humour. He's a very good choice as the lead anchorman on Sky Sports' Football League coverage.
Although, whilst I'm not old enough to remember him on there, I'm told by various people that he was even better on BRMB with the legend that is Tom Ross.
If anyone's interested, that season that IanFergus quotes the commentators from (1982/83?) would have been one of Tom Ross' first seasons with BRMB - presumabley as a reporter rather than a commentator. By the late '80's, he was the networks Sports Editor - and he's never looked back. A true legend in West Midlands broadcasting.

Apologies - no doubt your right Rocket Romano, as I didn't actually hear any of Century 100-102FM's Newcastle United commentary (as they stream the Boro games live online instead).
I did, however, hear Phil Blacker's full-time reporter - and then Alistair Brownlee mentioned Malcolm MacDonald's involvement on the 'Three Legends' phone-in - so I (wrongly) presumed it was him. Thanks for clearing things up though.
Going back to an old question, anyone know who BRMB's co-commentator on the Arsenal-Villa game on Saturday was?

Another interesting post Ian - thanks for the details.
I'm interested in what you say on RTE Radio - I often check out a bit of the build-up/post match reaction on their Irish rival Today FM online on a Saturday, but rarely check out RTE - whenever I tend to tune in 252LW on Saturday afternoons they always seem to be covering horse racing or something! What's the story with their Premiership coverage - I take it they have reporting acreditation, but what's the story when it comes to live rights? Did they used to have them, only to lose them to Today FM in recent years?

My memory is that Dom joined Century pretty much to replace him... as soon as Capital bought Century which I reckon was not long into the 99-00 season. He was barely there for a year before following his boss Paul Jackson to Virgin.
Prior to that he'd been at BRMB until the summer of 1997 before moving to Capital Gold in London when Proudfoot replaced Ian Crocker in Birmingham at BRMB.”

Interesting stuff lads (both to Shaun and nwallop) - Dom joining Century 105.4FM to replace Jim Proudfoot would make sense, as almost immedietly after JP covered Manchester United's Treble, he headed off to commentate for Sky Sports and talkSPORT as well.
However, could it have been the case that Dominic Johnson worked primarily as a presenter, with Mark Regan (now BBC Radio WM's Sports Editor) being their top match commentator that season? It says in Rego's WM profile that he commentated on Manchester United in the World Club Cup in 1999-2000 and the Brazilian tournament as well they took part in rather than the FA Cup that season. Not that he last that much longer as a Century commentator than Proudfoot - by 2002-03, he was Tom Ross' deputy on Capital Gold Birmingham, with him becoming WM's Sports Editor the following seasons. Johnson/Regan's successors on Century would be Fraser Dainton (now Sky Sports News - anyone remember his famous commentary on Beckham's free-kick in the England-Greece game which is used on that Bell & Spurling record?) and current commentator Gary Weaver.
All this talk of Proudfoot and Regan has got me thinking - as clearly there is a lot of fans of BRMB/Xtra AM/Capital Gold Birmingham's football coverage - can we list the deputy commentators who have played second fiddle to Tom Ross over on 1152am in the West Midlands down the years?
Here's the one's I remember - feel free to fill-in the gaps and correct me where neccesary:
2006-07: Nathan Alleyne (brought in from The Villian this season)
2005-06: James Mountford (moved to BBC WM this season)
2004-05: James Mountford (well, reports only - this was the season when BRMB had no live rights)
2003-04: Ian Danter (now talkSPORT)
2002-03: Mark Regan (now BBC WM Sports Editor)
2001-02: Jack Woodward (now The Villian)
2000-01: Mark Bolton maybe (? - then left to Central TV, now at Sky Sports)
1999-2000: Mike Taylor (now BBC WM)
1998-99: Mike Taylor (?)
1997-98: Jim Proudfoot (left to Century, then joined Sky Sports/talkSPORT - now moving to Setanta Sports in September)
1996-97: Ian Crocker (now at Setanta, joined Sky Sports full-time in 1998, after having worked for them on a freelance basis alongside his radio work - so where did he go in the 97-98 season?)
And that's as far as I know - any advances/corrections?

). Although I'll never forgive him for letting talented young youth prospects like Karl Hawley and Andy Bishop slip through our fingers without them ever getting a proper chance.
