Welcome back Walsall_Chris. Pete Smith is the reporter for IRN at Blackburn this evening. IRN used James Gibson at Chelsea.

Chris Mallaband (who reported on Tranmere for Radio City) and Tom Parker (who used to report on Preston for the late lamented Red Rose Radio Sport) seemed to be used with increasing frequency by IRN in the North-West.

At a local level, BBC London reporters were:
Chelsea v Watford - Chris Legge
West Ham at Middlesbrough - Phil Parry and Clive Walker commentating on FM as well as for BBC Essex on 765AM
Fulham at Portsmouth - Steve Houghton
Charlton at Wigan - Nick Godwin commentating on DAB and Sky as well as for BBC Radio Kent on 774AM
Crystal Palace v Stoke - Kevin Hand
QPR at Luton - Jonathan Beck
Yeading at Nottingham Forest - Mark Taylor
Bromley at Gillingham - Mike Lawrence
Leyton Orient v Notts County - Dave Victor
Brentford v Doncaster - Andy Tilsley
Barnet at Gainsborough Trinity - Barry Swain

For those interested in the Rugby Union reporters, IRN used Andrew Titheridge at Twickenham, Steve McMenemie at Murrayfield and Hamish Stewart at Cardiff. I am assuming that David Brady was reporting from Dublin.

A nomination for the worst commentary of the season - and sadly I can't tell you you they were.

As an Arsenal fan, I looked for a commentary on our game at Everton this week in the league cup. The only commentary available (in London) was the BBC Merseyside commentary over the net.

Now, it is only to be expected that it would be biased toward Everton - and that is fine and as expected.

However, the commentators did not notice the half time substitutes, and kept, in particular, referring to saves from Almunia in goal, when he had been replaced by Poom. This continued through-out the second half.

Are the BBC Merseyside commentators normally so poor on matters of fact? Or was the fact that Liverpool were playing (and their commentary was also available, albeit not on the website) mean that a very second rate team did the Everton game?

Thanks for the welcome back Ian, and thanks for the information as well.

By the way, if you're interested in who's doing what on a local level (well, the West Midlands only), I tend to listen the commentators and reporters used on games for BBC Radio WM and BRMB/Capital Gold Birmingham in the 'BBC WM Football Coverage' thread rather than this one.

Today's national reporters included:
BBC Radio Five Live
Reading v Tottenham - Simon Brotherton, Ian Brown and Martin Keown (c)
Weymouth v Bury - Alistair Bruce-Ball and Dennis Rofe
Arsenal v Liverpool - Alan Green, Mike Ingham and David Pleat (c)

Talk Sport
Reading v Tottenham - Dom McGuinness
Weymouth v Bury - Nigel Pearson
Arsenal v Liverpool - Mike Bovill

At a local level, BBC London had a commentary team of Nick Godwin and Clive Walker with Tottenham at Reading (where I assume Joel Hufford and Tim Dellor were commentating for BBC Radio Berkshire). Emma Jones was reporting on Arsenal v Liverpool with Caroline Barker introducing the coverage.

In answer to RichardRees, from what I gather, Ian Kennedy and Mike Hughes act as commentators on BBC Radio Merseyside although it seems to be anybody's guess which of the Merseyside teams they report. At least Radio City (the last I heard) seems to have settled on Steve Hovershal for Liverpool and Alan Irwin for Everton.

An update for the Solent region.

Portsmouth V Fulham - Laurence Herdman and Guy Whittingham - full commentary.

Sunderland V Southampton - Tony Husband and Dave Merrington - full commentary

Bournemouth V Boston - Paul Scott and John Williams - full commentary

Johnny Cantor did Weymouth V Bury on Sunday and Havant and Waterlooville V Millwall on Monday night both full commentaries.

Ian and Scott, thanks for the details.

I would be interested to know who covered the Macclesfield vs Walsall game last night for Five Live, talkSPORT and Beacon Radio (providing the stations had actually sent out reports to these games at all).

On BBC Radio WM, the commentary team used was Mike Taylor and Daz Hale (as opposed to Rob Gurney and Hale, as I had previously predicted in the WM Football Coverage thread), with Bill Leslie and Gary Birtles (ex-Capital Gold London and Century 106FM respectively) commentating on TV for Sky Sports 1.

Macclesfield V Walsall was Ian Dennis on 5 Live. He only did updates as 2nd half commentary came from Havant V Millwall with Mike Sewell and Leroy Rosenior.

enjoyed listening to Leroy Rosenior last night - I like the way 5Live have fresh voices on every now and again as they often turn up some good co-commentators: Matt Holland and Dean Keily(sp?) are other examples.

Andy Clarke did the Milwall match for talkSPORT. Not sure whether they did reports from the other game.

Thanks to Scott and 4-4-2 for the details from Monday night.

I listened to commentary on Wales excellent 4-0 win over Liectenstien (sp?) last night over on BBC Radio Wales, and commentators Rob Phillips and Ian Walsh were on top form as per usual. I was interested to hear Steve James presenting the show with Kevin Ratcliffe though, does this mean Oliver Hides (the regular presenter of BBC Radio Wales' Sportstime for the last few years) has left his role as the stations main football anchor now?

Whenever I've tuned in to Saturday Sportstime this season, it always seems to be James or someone else presenting the programme now, so I'm wondering has Hides decided to concentrate on his BBC Wales TV commitments full time now? Has he taken over the Wales On Saturday programme, now that IGH's replacement Jason Mohammed seems to be presenting the 6.30 news almost every night of the week now?

The commentary team for Man City v Fulham on Sports Extra now is Nigel Adderley, Dean Saunders and Richard Connelly. I've never heard Richard Connelly on Five Live before, either reporting or commentating. Is he from one of the BBC local stations?

Conor McNamara is commentating (for the first half anyway) for BBC Radio Five Live.

Richard Connelly was the lead commentator until the end of last season for BBC Radio Lancashire. I suspect that Andy Bayes took over that role near the end of last season.

Thanks Ian.

Five Live has switched to Sheff Utd v Man Utd now the rugby has finished and Ian Dennis is on fine form as usual. Sounds like he's really enjoying himself. Doing a great job, especially with no summariser.

Regarding Richard Connelly, from what I have found about him on the internet, he was BBC Radio Lancashire's Blackburn Rovers commentator last season, however he doesn't seem to be listed in their football coverage details this season. It might be that he's switched BBC local radio stations, as I don't think he's going to be a regular Five Live commentator.

I've heard Connelly on Five Live only once before, reporting on a Saturday lower league 'Game Of The Day' for them a couple of weeks ago, but from what I heard of him today he did sound fairly good. That said, I'd have prefered to have heard the excellent BBC Radio Derby commentator Ross Fletcher used in this slot, who has also been called upon as a reporter by Five Live in recent weeks.

Anyway, on too some commentary/reporting details from today:

BBC Radio Five Live:

Arlo White presenting 2.30pm commentary on the rugby union with Alistair Hignell, Ian Robertson & co.

Football commentaries:

Man City v Fulham - Conor McNamara (reports and partial first half commentary as Ian says)
Sheff Utd v Man Utd - Ian Dennis (reports and partial second half commentary as Shaun says)
Middlesbrough v Liverpool - John Murray, Alan Green & Don Goodman (full commentary)

Reports:

Arsenal v Newcastle - Darren Fletcher
Chelsea v West Ham - Jonathan Legard
Everton v Bolton - Stuart Hall
Portsmouth v Watford - Mike Sewell
Reading v Charlton - John Southall

Birmingham v Wolves - Simon Mann
Leicester v Preston - Rob Nothman
Luton v Derby - Jonathan Overend
Rotherham v Forest - Peter Slater
Macclesfield v Boston - Juliet Ferrington
Celtic v Inverness - Roddy Forsyth

BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra:

Howard Bentham presenting with Paul Parker in the studio.

Man City v Fulham - Nigel Adderley, Richard Connelly & Dean Saunders
Chelsea v West Ham - Jacqui Oatley, Alistair Bruce-Ball & Mark Bright

talkSPORT:

Nigel Pearson presenting, with studio pundits Alvin Martin and Gary Stevens watching Sheffield United vs Manchester United and Arsenal vs Newcastle United on their monitors respectively. Their reporters were:

Man City v Fulham - Dom McGuinness
Arsenal v Newcastle - Andy Clarke
Chelsea v West Ham - Ian Abrahams
Everton v Bolton - Chris Cooper
Portsmouth v Watford - Paul McDowell
Reading v Charlton - Tony Incenzo
Sheff Utd v Man Utd - Tim White
Middlesbrough v Liverpool - Graham Courtney

Birmingham v Wolves - Ian Danter
Leeds v Southampton - Eamonn Watson
Leicester v Preston - Geoff Peters
Sunderland v Colchester - John Temple (who also did this game for Soccer Saturday)
West Brom v Burnley - Grahame Lloyd

Today FM:

Man City v Fulham - Jake Katborg
Arsenal v Newcastle - Ron Jones & Paddy Mulligan for the commentary game
Chelsea v West Ham - Ian Beech
Everton v Bolton - Steve Roberts
Portsmouth v Watford - Graham Miller
Reading v Charlton - Mike Lawrence (?)
Sheff Utd v Man Utd - Tom Tyrrell
Middlesbrough v Liverpool - Gordon Cox

Capital Gold/IRN:

Man City v Fulham - Peter Smith
Arsenal v Newcastle - Russell Hargreaves
Chelsea v West Ham - Mark Scott (linking things together for Capital Gold - not sure who the IRN man was)
Everton v Bolton - Tom Parker
Portsmouth v Watford - Peter Hood (ex Power FM commentator)
Reading v Charlton - Paul Ashton
Sheff Utd v Man Utd - Nick Johnson
Middlesbrough v Liverpool - ? - Ian, a question for you, which stations use the IRN reporters on the late games? Capital Gold London or Birmingham don't.

Capital Gold Birmingham commentators:

Birmingham v Wolves - Tom Ross & Walsall legend Martin O'Connor
West Brom v Burnley - Nathan Alleyne & Tony 'Bomber' Brown

BBC WM:

Birmingham v Wolves - Mark Regan & Paul Franks
Hereford v Walsall - Mike Taylor & Daz Hale
West Brom v Burnley - Andrew Dawkins (reports only)

BBC Radio Wales:

Steve James presenting, so still no sign of Oliver Hides on Sportstime!

Port Vale v Swansea - Rob Phillips & Kevin Ratcliffe
Notts County v Wrexham - Roger Hughes & Jason Perry
Arsenal v Newcastle - Iwan Roberts with reports

(So, by proccess of elimination, John Hardy & Ian Walsh probably did last night's Cardiff vs QPR game. I know Ian Brown & Barry Horne did second half commentary on that game for Five Live, with Gareth Williams reporting on talkSPORT).

For those of you interested in rugby union, doing the England-South Africa game were Andrew McKenna for talkSPORT, Sky Sports commentator Simon Ward for Capital Gold/IRN and Alan Jenkins (a Welshman!) for BBC Radio Wales.

Ian Gwyn Hughes & Ian Walsh did the Cardiff v QPR game on Radio Wales SE FM. It was a disappointing game (including the result for Cardiff fans) and a poor attendance (around 13,000) due to the rugby being played at the Millennium Stadium at the same time.

I suppose if next year's Premier League contract had been in place today talkSPORT would have had full match commentary on Chelsea v West Ham and Five Live Sports Extra would have had full commentary on Sheff Utd v Man Utd?

Chris, at my local station (TFM) they only use the IRN preview of the late game and don't have any updates unless its a local game. Seems a bit counter-productive to me!

Aphrodite7 is correct.

Walsall_Chris, the only station I can find the late IRN reporter is on BFBS Radio One. Mike Lawrence occasionally does reports on BBC London. The Chelsea game was covered by Elliot Cook with Simon Watts doing the classified results.

TFM had David Easom covering the Middlesborough game.

Thanks for the further details Westward, Aphrodite7 and Ian.

Ian, if you'll excuse my ignorance, but what is BFBS Radio One? I don't think I've come accross it before and would be interested to find out what it is...

Right, to some details of the commentary teams and reporters on today's four football matches:

BBC Radio Five Live:

Ipswich v Norwich - Darren Fletcher, Alistair Bruce-Ball & Steve Froggart
Wigan v Aston Villa - Ian Brown, Mike Ingham & Pat Nevin
Blackburn v Tottenham - Conor McNamara, Nigel Adderley & Jimmy Armfield
Hearts v Rangers - Roddy Forsyth (reports only)

talkSPORT Reports:

Ipswich v Norwich - Kev Lawrence
Wigan v Aston Villa - Tim White
Hearts v Rangers - Andy Clarke
Blackburn v Tottenham - Chris Cooper

BBC Radio Scotland coverage of Hearts vs Rangers:

Richard Gordon presenting alongside Craig Levein, David Begg & Gordon Smith on the commentary, with Chick Young and James Traynor at pitchside.

Local Radio commentary teams on Blackburn vs Tottenham:

BBC Radio London: Nick Godwin & Scott Minto (Caroline Barker & Mick Collins presenting in the studio)
BBC Radio Lancashire: Andy Bayes & ? (Gerald Jackson & Alex Entwistle presenting)

Local Radio commentary teams on Wigan vs Aston Villa

BBC Radio WM: Rob Gurney & Daz Hale (the latter also the anchor)
BRMB: Tom Ross & Pat Herd (the former also the anchor)
BBC Radio Manchester: Mark Allen (reports only)
102.4 Wish FM: Adam Summerton & Peter Atherton (Steve Timmins presenting)

It's the first time I've tuned into Wish FM in Wigan, and it's interesting to hear that Adam Summerton's become their match commentator on the Latics match with Villa - as I remember hearing him do a Villa game on BRMB on a Saturday when Blues and West Brom had early and late Sautrday games last season! He was good back then, and sounded good today - despite Wish FM having this weird insistence on playing adverts during their commentaries (that's not at half and full time, but actually whilst the game is in full-flow!) which didn't help.

Apparently he used to cover Mansfield Town for local commercial radio and the Mansfield website last season, so is live commentary a new thing for Wish FM this season or since UTV took over The Wireless Group?

Speaking off which, as he commentates on a UTV Radio station could Summerton become the next Chris Cooper and eventually join the excellent talkSPORT reporting team on a full-time basis? OK, so it's been a while since TWG (as was) plucked Cooper from The Pulse of West Yorkshire to report for talkSPORT (he's now one of their top commentators), but I believe many of the people who had a say in chosing talkSPORT's match reporters back then - such as Adrian Durham and Nigel Pearson - are still in place today.

This season, reporter Gareth Williams has been brought in from one of their regional stations Swansea Sound, and a couple of seasons back Sam Matterface, commentator on Pompey games for 107.4 The Quay FM, seemed to be knocking on talkSPORT's door to join his former co-commentator Micky Quinn on that station, however he hasn't reported on Talk since The Quay was sold by the parent company.
